Hardbopjazz Posted January 9, 2022 Report Posted January 9, 2022 (edited) Composer Marilyn Bergman has passed away at the age of 93. Probably her best known composition was, “what are you doing the rest of your life?” Edited January 9, 2022 by Hardbopjazz Quote
sonnymax Posted January 9, 2022 Report Posted January 9, 2022 Marilyn Bergman was an Oscar, Emmy & Grammy-winning lyricist, not a composer. She and her husband Alan collaborated with Marvin Hamlisch ("The Way We Were"), Lew Spence ("Nice 'n' Easy"), Quincy Jones ("In the Heat of the Night"), Michel Legrand ("The Windmills of Your Mind") and many others. "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?" was composed by Legrand, with lyrics by the Bergmans. Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted January 9, 2022 Author Report Posted January 9, 2022 (edited) Thanks for clearing that up. But I do see her name as one of the composers for “what are you doing the rest of your life.” It must be a mistake on the lp. I know Michel Legrand and Allen Bergman are the composers. Maybe she had something to do with the writing of that tune as well. Edited January 9, 2022 by Hardbopjazz Quote

They were a prolific pair who wrote many great lyrics. You mean "the Bergmans", of course. Quote
Ken Dryden Posted January 9, 2022 Report Posted January 9, 2022 Of course that’s what I meant… Senior moments this soon? Quote
JSngry Posted January 9, 2022 Report Posted January 9, 2022 So, what are you doing the rest of your life? Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted January 9, 2022 Report Posted January 9, 2022 Jack Jones Sings Michel Legrand, featuring lyrics primarily by the Bergmans, is the greatest album Scott Walker never made. Jack signed my copy, and said it is one of his favorites among his own catalog. RIP Marilyn. Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted January 10, 2022 Report Posted January 10, 2022 The first time I saw Jack live, with orchestra, he did this song, and this arrangement. Quote

Gheorghe Posted January 31, 2022 Report Posted January 31, 2022 I have not heard of her, but the title "what have you been doin for the rest of your life" I know from a later Earl Coleman album, I think it was on Xanadu in 1977. Quote
sgcim Posted January 31, 2022 Report Posted January 31, 2022 RIP. The Bergman's were extraordinarily prolific, and just had that gift for coming up with lyrics that never seemed forced, or trite. Quote
