Dan Gould Posted December 26, 2021 Report Posted December 26, 2021 If it weren't for some generous loan officers I wouldn't have had a haul at all (wife's decision, and I am not so sure how this fits into the "happy wife, happy life" paradigm, but there it is). So thanks to those unnamed LOs I have the following to enjoy: The new Blakey in Japan thing; The Mulgrew Miller/Roy Hargrove duets; Houston Person, Live in Paris; Buck Clayton's Jazz World (and it just dawned on me that he had assistance from Nancy Miller Elliott, whose photographs were donated to Rutgers and I had to work with her son to get permission to use two photos of Percy France at Paul Quinichette's memorial service for the website.) A DVD copy of Jazz USA, featuring Cannonball and Teddy Edwards. I tried to get this years ago and one of the few occasions when someone claimed to have shipped and it never arrived. Hopefully second time is the charm. $50 at Discogs to be invested oh, I don't know ... maybe today? How did you do? Quote
jazzbo Posted December 26, 2021 Report Posted December 26, 2021 (edited) I bought myself one box set for Christmas: the Nucleus at the BBC set. My best friend gave me a gift certificate which I turned into two Marvel Omnibus editions I have wanted: the "Suspense" stories (pre-superhero Atlas and Marvel) of Steve Ditko. His work during this time period just amazes me. Edited December 26, 2021 by jazzbo Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted December 26, 2021 Report Posted December 26, 2021 Given that Ms. TTK, her brother, and my brother are all music geeks, lots of LPs and CDs were exchanged! Quote
Steve Reynolds Posted December 26, 2021 Report Posted December 26, 2021 A bunch of CD’s: 2 relative pitch - John Butcher trio including the great Barre Phillips plus a crazy duo CD 4 erstwhile - all newer releases / first listen to a couple of them reveal a very vibrant artform still - a bit far removed from the great releases of 10-15 years ago. 2 no business - Rodrigo Amado Motion Trio + Alexander von Schlippenbach: The Fields & Mats Gustafsson duo with Sabu Toyozumi Joelle Leandre 3 CD mini-box on Not Two Wilco 6 CD live at Capital Theatre 2014 Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted December 26, 2021 Report Posted December 26, 2021 (edited) One of the LPs that I received was: THE METRONOME QUINTET AT THE ZOO! A gift from my bro-in-law to me. Edited December 28, 2021 by Teasing the Korean Quote
mikeweil Posted December 26, 2021 Report Posted December 26, 2021 (edited) The latter is not two LPs, it's one ten-incher - both sides are pictured. I had the CD/DVD pack already but will pass it on to our best friends. Bought these two myself, I always fulfill me some wish for Xmas. My wife wouldn't dare buy music for me. She bought me a newly published book on the women of the Bach family, which I already read through. A dear friend sent her a great coffee table book on Tuva, that comes with a CD by Huun-Huur-Tu and a documentary DVD on throat singing. Edited December 26, 2021 by mikeweil Quote
Michael Posted December 26, 2021 Report Posted December 26, 2021 Daughter got me 2LP Coltrane Love Supreme/Live in Seattle. Wife got me 2 books by George Saunders Specifically did not request any music other than the Coltrane. Too much catch up listening to do. Maybe next year! Happy holidays and thanks from Scott & Ellen for the continued support of the Never-ending CD Sale! Mike Quote
felser Posted December 26, 2021 Report Posted December 26, 2021 A lot of coffee and a book on the new West Side Story movie (seeing it tomorrow at last, first time we've been in a theater since the third Lord of the Rings movie!). Quote
Ken Dryden Posted December 26, 2021 Report Posted December 26, 2021 Mostly clothes, no music. I'm at the point where my wife would more likely purchase a duplicate of something I had. Quote
GA Russell Posted December 27, 2021 Report Posted December 27, 2021 I give myself on Christmas the box sets I have purchased throughout the year. If a family member gives me a Christmas check, he/she is told that he/she bought me the box. Henry Cow Barbara Thompson The Police Lee Morgan (2) Lulu Roy Brooks Chico Hamilton (2) Dave Douglas Steve Lacy Ed Blackwell McCoy Tyner Johnny Smith In addition, my girlfriend took me to see Miles for my birthday in Washington in 1971. "The Lost Septet" box was recorded on my birthday three weeks earlier, so I am looking forward to that! Quote

Other than the Leandre that you mentioned elsewhere, did any of this interesting sounding haul stand out? Just starting in on them. Some think Rodrigo Amado isn’t what I think he is. I think he’s endlessly inventive within a certain “limited” scope. Maybe it’s his dry sound. Love it. My first listen to The Field was captivating. I’ve not always been thrilled with recent Schlippenbach stuff but his playing here is gorgeous. Excellent recorded sound. The 2 relative pitch recordings are great. Almost all of their releases are very unique. I always find them interesting to hear. fwiw the newer erstwhile releases I’ve listened to over the past 3-4 years are as amazing as some of the older wonderful recordings. They still sound fresh & new. Hole in my Head, Green Ways & Everyone Needs a Plan are 3 of the new ones I’ve listened to. I’m all in. my suggestion might be the group of Lambkin/Lescalleet recordings released over the years if you’ve not heard them. But there are many many exciting (to my ears) releases from the past 5-8 years. Jon only releases stuff that meets high standards - and he’s got good ears for this stuff. Teasing the Korean Posted December 27, 2021 Report Posted December 27, 2021 So far we have spun: Morricone - Maddalene (1971) - A gift to Ms. TTK Piero Piccioni - Il Dio Sotto la Pelle (1974) A gift from Ms. TTK to me. Quote

Breadwinner & Air Supply for erstwhiles in general don’t miss “Between” from Rowe/Nakamura if you’ve never heard it. Stunning 2 CD set. So many other great ones but these 3 are good starts Quote

Dan, I suspect I have the patience because (as you can see from the above list) the recordings I buy are decades old. So a few more months won't matter! When I was in high school listening to the British Invasion, we all wanted everything that was hot off the presses (That's a pun.), but now is different. Quote
