Shrdlu Posted December 19, 2021 Report Posted December 19, 2021 Dexter recorded two sessions for Blue Note in mid 1962 that were shelved. Many years later, three tracks from each session were put onto a Japanese LP. It was given the inappropriate title "Landslide", because they added the unissued track with that name from the "Dexter Calling" session to make up time. I would have used a title from the two main sessions. Today, this music exists, on CD, in a Japanese version, and in the U.S. box set of all of Dexter's Blue Note recordings. I made up a CD from that set. The audio is excellent. Here are the details Dexter Gordon Quintet Tommy Turrentine, trumpet; Dexter Gordon, tenor sax; Charles Thompson, piano; Al Lucas, bass; Willie Bobo, drums. van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, NJ, May 5, 1962 tk.11 Serenade In Blue tk.12 You Said It tk.19 Love Locked Out Dexter Gordon Quintet Dave Burns, trumpet; Dexter Gordon, tenor sax; Sonny Clark, piano; Ron Carter, bass; Philly Joe Jones, drums. van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, NJ, June 25, 1962 tk.6. Blue Gardenia tk.12 Second Balcony Jump tk.21 Six Bits Jones Quote
Shrdlu Posted December 19, 2021 Author Report Posted December 19, 2021 On the first session, Tommy Turrentine only plays on the second number. How bad could the other three items recorded at each session have been? Dear old Alfred was a bit of a fusspot at times. Probably, one reason for the material being shelved was the success of the two later sessions with Sonny Clark: "Go" and "A Swinging Affair". On the first of these sessions, Charles Thompson could be mistaken for Sonny Clark. There is also a rare bass solo by Ron Carter. He seldom soloed in those days, but there is one on Gil Evans's "Out Of The Cool", with an atmospheric bit of bassoon, played by Budd Johnson, in the background: a great moment. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted December 19, 2021 Report Posted December 19, 2021 "Landslide" was issued in the US in 1980 - "rainbow series", LT-1051. Quote

Shrdlu Posted December 19, 2021 Author Report Posted December 19, 2021 I have spun this a few times during the last couple of days. It is REALLY GOOD. Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted December 19, 2021 Report Posted December 19, 2021 I also made a CD of "Landslide" from that Blue Note box set. I even created my own artwork. I also had the original LT LP and I picked up that TOCJ CD a few years back. It is a very good LP even if it is made up of bits and pieces of sessions. Quote
