Hardbopjazz Posted November 20, 2021 Report Posted November 20, 2021 Another master has left. RIP. Thanks for the music. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted November 21, 2021 Report Posted November 21, 2021 Damn. That's sad news. Quote
mjzee Posted November 21, 2021 Report Posted November 21, 2021 RIP. Always a thoughtful, moving performer and leader. Quote
felser Posted November 21, 2021 Report Posted November 21, 2021 RIP, one of the best on his instrument, and wonderful arranger. 89 years old. Quote
mikeweil Posted November 21, 2021 Report Posted November 21, 2021 (edited) He spent several years in Europe and conributed to some excellent big bands. The one he led with Joe Haiser was really special, Dexter Gordon playing in the section on Ben Webster's tenor sax. Thanks, and R.I.P. jazzbo Posted November 21, 2021 Report Posted November 21, 2021 He was two days older than my Dad! I loved his playing and arranging with Maynard on Roulette and those wonderful Atlantic albums; "Sister Salvation" on Atlantic was one of my three first jazz albums. Quote
Peter Friedman Posted November 21, 2021 Report Posted November 21, 2021 A fine trombonist, composer and arranger. He will be missed. R.I.P. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted November 21, 2021 Report Posted November 21, 2021 I don’t particularly doubt the news, but I’ve looked for some sort of an obit and perhaps some confirmation. Virtually nothing out there, at least that my Google skills can come up with. Really just this — from Get India News(!) — only posted 4 hours ago… https://getindianews.com/who-was-slide-hampton-and-what-was-his-cause-of-death-american-jazz-trombonist-died-at-89/ Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted November 21, 2021 Author Report Posted November 21, 2021 There are posts all over Facebook from musicians. https://m.facebook.com/watch/?v=488161782394520 Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted November 21, 2021 Report Posted November 21, 2021 Ah, I’m not on Facebook — never have been, I have to confess. Quote
BillF Posted November 21, 2021 Report Posted November 21, 2021 Sad news. Saw him in Manchester in 1984 in a band with the interesting lineup of Johnny Griffin, Jimmy Deuchar, Dave Cliff, Peter Ind and Al Levitt. Quote
JSngry Posted November 21, 2021 Report Posted November 21, 2021 Spent a week at an Aebersold clinic where he was a clinician. One those people was totally clear-eyed about how thing worked (musically and otherwise). Great spirt, superb communicator, and all-around asset to the music. RIP. Quote
sidewinder Posted November 21, 2021 Report Posted November 21, 2021 (edited) Sad news but a good long life. Hope that the NY based tribute Octet keeps playing his arrangements and keeping this music alive. Saw him just the once - not playing but conducting an all-star orchestra in Rotterdam. Class act and a great trombonist and arranger. The session he did on MPS with Dexter Gordon is particularly good. 2 hours ago, BillF said: Sad news. I’ll have to check the Manchester Jazz Bible to see if that one is mentioned. Edited November 21, 2021 by sidewinder Quote

It was in post-Free Trade Hall days and a bit late for Bill Birch. The venue was the Royal Exchange Theatre. Theatre in the round was never better! I recall Deuchar looking astounded at Griffin's torrent of notes! Quote
CJ Shearn Posted November 21, 2021 Report Posted November 21, 2021 Saw him live in college. Was fantastic. Quote

Maybe he wasn’t a household name, but he certainly was known pretty well among jazz fans, I would think? Also, just looking at that “article” again, how in the heck did Slide amass such an incredible fortune as a jazz trombonist??!! Quoting directly from the article… Slide Hampton Net Worth The net worth of Slide Hampton has been reported to be approximately $10 Million, he is a well-known musician, he must have amassed a sizable fortune throughout his life, working with numerous bands… Quote

Try pulling the other one! Quote

Hardbopjazz Posted November 22, 2021 Author Report Posted November 22, 2021 Steve Davis paid tribute to Slide tonight at a gig he was playing. Quote

RogerF Posted November 22, 2021 Report Posted November 22, 2021 (edited) Slide Hampton recorded one of my all time favourite albums: Slide Hampton & Vaclav Zahradnik Big Band : B&S.
