Rabshakeh Posted November 16, 2021 Report Posted November 16, 2021 I've seen reports that Barney Rachabane, one of the greats of South African jazz, who played with Abdullah Ibrahim, Chris McGregor and Tete Mbambisa among many others, has died. Not that much coverage, even in the SA press. Quote
aparxa Posted November 16, 2021 Report Posted November 16, 2021 Very fine contributions with Ibrahim and with Kippie Moketsi! I am quite intrigued by the records he made with the group called Roots. He also features on a few records that have been in my playlist for years and would deserve a reissue from Matsuli or Jazzman or others: Tete Mbambisa - Tete's Big Sound, Basil Mannenberg Coetzee - Shrimp Boats Quote

Shrdlu Posted November 16, 2021 Report Posted November 16, 2021 I'm very sorry to hear this. I lived in Johannesburg, South Africa, from 1972 to 1976, and I frequently played with Barney. I was teaching Math at Wits University, and soon after I arrived there, I discovered that there were blows every Sunday afternoon in the Student Union building. Barney was often there. We were good friends. Kippie Moeketsi was there from time to time, and we played together. Quote
