Ed S Posted November 28, 2004 Report Posted November 28, 2004 Miles Davis LP set of the last Sony CD box. Thanks Quote
pryan Posted November 28, 2004 Report Posted November 28, 2004 Well the plot continues to thicken. As I mentioned, I had originally checked my order status at CDUniverse to find that the Jazztet item was listed as "no longer available" and so figured my order was cancelled. Then a couple days back I get an e-mail saying it shipped and that it was a single CD. It arrives today and...it's the FULL SET! Most bizarre, but a fortunate turn of events! Thanks Clunky for putting me on to this opportunity. Score! That's awesome, Dr. J. Give your thoughts on the set as a whole once you've listened to it. It's on my Mosaics to get eventually list. Son-of-a-Weizen Posted November 29, 2004 Report Posted November 29, 2004 WOW...CD Universe lied to me. What a great outfit they are. With your post in mind, I just went and had a look at my order history to double-check on the 'Jazztet' order/cancellation 'dance' that I went through with their customer servive reps 2 months ago....and the only previous orders that are listed are ones from a few years ago, including one for 10 items that was apparently shipped. Problem is, it wasn't an order I ever placed. No way there would have been a bunch of Jimmy Smith cds in one of my orders... no way! Quote

jazzbo Posted January 10, 2005 Report Posted January 10, 2005 Looking forward to the Andrew Hill and Art Pepper sets. Quote
brownie Posted January 10, 2005 Report Posted January 10, 2005 That Freddie Slack Mosaic Select intrigues me. Can't remember having heard anything by him. I know Barney Bigard was among the musicians in many Capitol sessions by Slack. Is the material really worthy of a Mosaic Select? Quote
jazzbo Posted January 10, 2005 Report Posted January 10, 2005 Oh no don't get Pee Deedly (P D) started again! I would trust Cuscuna to pick worthy material, and from the Slack I've heard with T-Bone and with Ella Mae Morse I'd say I'd probably want to hear it. Quote
Ed S Posted January 10, 2005 Report Posted January 10, 2005 I wonder what ever happened to the Willie "the Lion" Smith that was mentioned a couple of years ago on the old Verve board. I remember there was a lot of complaints about Verve's refusal to lease material to Mosaic at that time. Seemed like every one of the suggestions was met with a "we have plans for a box of our own" type of response from chief cook and bottle washer Mark@verve. Didn't he mention that Verve had agreed to lease some Willie "the Lion" Smith material to Mosaic - or am I hallucinating again? Thankfully, Verve (or UMG) has re-thought that stance and we've been seeing some great sets recently. Quote
BeBop Posted January 10, 2005 Report Posted January 10, 2005 The Hill will certainly be tempting - check out those sidemen! I'm curious though, I didn't think that Selects were envisioned to be so 'heavy' on unissued material. Not that I'm complaining... Quote
Brad Posted January 10, 2005 Report Posted January 10, 2005 The Slack sounds unusual because it's quite a departure from what the Select series has produced before. Quote

David Ayers Posted January 17, 2005 Report Posted January 17, 2005 Actually no - they allowed for 4 disc sets in the original trailers for this series - its good to see they don't stick rigidly to three (and lose or damage a good set concept in the process). Quote
alankin Posted January 17, 2005 Report Posted January 17, 2005 They could fit as many as six CDs in the same size package. Quote
Ron S Posted January 17, 2005 Report Posted January 17, 2005 They could fit as many as six CDs in the same size package. Then what would be the distinction between a 6-, or even 4-, CD Select and a regular Mosaic box? The purported "completeness" of the contents? Or just the size of the box? And does SIZE really matter??? Quote

dsgtrane Posted January 19, 2005 Report Posted January 19, 2005 They could fit as many as six CDs in the same size package. Yeah, I do wish the packaging was a bit smaller ala the Blue Note versions of the Getz Roost or Nichols Blue Note sets. Hopefully the 4 CD Mulligan set will utililize a slimline double jewel case or two. Quote
