Add Michael Dease, who was first an all state saxophonist in high school, but he wanted to play trombone. His band director wouldn’t give him an instrument. So he borrowed one and he was all state that same year. He has built a strong discography.

Thanks for the responses. Would love to see recommendations for specific recordings featuring trombone, say from the last 20 years or so. I know the question is revealing my ignorance, but listening to older jazz I realized this is an instrument I have always loved to hear, and yet I don't know a lot that has been produced in the 21st century...

Gianluca Petrella is an excellent trombonist. This release of his is excellent, for example: https://gianlucapetrella.bandcamp.com/album/x-ray

From the older generation, Sebi Tramontana. This new one is good: https://inexhaustibleeditions.bandcamp.com/album/han-jiae

Thanks for reminding me of Petrella. I saw him play live in New York with Enrico Rava several years ago, and he stood out for sure.

Glenn Ferris is an outstanding trombonist. He's on many recordings. I like his trio ones (and the trio is a peculiar one, trombone - cello - bass) in particular: https://www.discogs.com/artist/3097057-Glenn-Ferris-Trio .

Thanks for confirming that he is both alive and active. I was unsure, and it makes me happy to know. He's been a favorite of mine since the Don Ellis days!

I have a track remixed by him from Rosalia De Souza, a Brazilian singer. From 2004. From her Garota Diferente. This record is all tracks from her debut Garota Moderna, remixed. Though that's more in what I'd call a Clubjazz bag. Danceable music with a jazz underscore. Like jazzfunk is, for example.

I know he has not been on the scene a whole lot in many years but I consider Grachan Moncur III still active because:

1) I saw him sit in with David Murray, Dave Burrell and Archie Shepp at An Die Musik in Baltimore in November 2019.

2) He was supposed to do a gig with Rene McLean in February 2020 which I think did occur.

3) He was in the studio with drummer Richard Pierson in the last year or so.

Grachan is supposed to do some Zoom presentation with pianist Alan Palmer as part of his online music school. I paid my $25, but nothing is scheduled yet.

If you're interested in doubling your pleasure, try this:

Cheap copies available too. I saw them in Boca Raton promoting their record, might have even been with Eddie Higgins backing them. But a very enjoyable concert and CD.

Somehow, I ended up with a CD-R of an album called Landmarks (1996) by a trombonist named Clifton Anderson.  I listened to part of it at work today, but I was distracted.  He seems like a solid player, but I can't really speak to the music overall without a closer listen.

Fun fact: Sonny Rollins is Clifton Anderson's uncle.  And you can hear Anderson as a sideman on a bunch of Rollins' albums, beginning in the 80s.

Anderson is a solid soloist -- but I think he's most interesting when he's providing long-toned background textures and counterpoint for Sonny's solos, almost like an organist.

Interesting!  I probably don't have anything by Sonny Rollins past the early- to mid-70s, so that would explain why I don't know the name.

He tried Ted Walters for a few years, but he didn't fool anybody except for Jim Walters Homes, who paid him a huge retainer, but then they went broke when "Ted" cashed the check the same day.
