Just heard he died... Sad... We owe that man a whole lot... As someone who's been to the Newport Jazz Festival for 20 years, I know Christian McBride took over a few years ago but George was still around a lot... RIP good man.

RIP, His Newport/NY Jazz festival was the first jazz concert i ever went to. My parents took me to see Sarah Vaughn, Kenny Burrell and herbie mann at the Felt Forum. My crazy father thought Sarah Vaughn was soused during her performance, because of the way she spoke!

I heard him play piano with a group including Buddy Tate, Norris Turney, Slam Stewart, Scott Hamilton, and Warrant Vache at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival in 1987.

Much later (in 2016), again  in New Orleans at Jazz Fest, he came out on stage beaming after a Geri Allen set dedicated to Errol Garner.

Great man and a great life !

Once I read a great story from Austrian Festival Organizator Fritz Thom about his meeting with George Wein on a winter day at Wein´s home (I think it was in the northern part of the States, somewhere with a lot of snow in winter, since Fritz Thom helped Mr. Wein to remove the snow around his house..... and then they stayed in the living room and talked....

I think, it was written in the illustrated program book of the "Danube Jazz Festival Hollabrunn 1985) where a lot of stars from Wein´s schedule performed, including Mr. Wein himself with his Newport Allstars.......
