Since most of my favorite Mingus records are studio: - Pithecanthropus Erectus - Blues and Roots - Oh Yeah - Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus - Mingus Dynasty - Mingus, Mingus, Mingus, Mingus, Mingus - Let My Children Hear Music - Changes I & Changes II The downside: No Antibes and nothing from the '64 tour. Two similar albums, one better. E.S.P v. Miles Smiles is harder, as E.S.P is quite different, and still has its link to the past. I listen to ESP more, so that one. Push Push or Mister Magic, judged solely on cover art? 42 minutes ago, BillF said: Dameron or Silver as composers? Dameron, but narrowly. I think his compositions have more room for interpretation, whereas Silver's always remind you of who did them first. Edited August 26, 2021 by Rabshakeh Quote

I meant for them to be chosen as a pair; that is, expressed (sort of) algebraically: (E.S.P. + Miles Smiles) OR (Sorcerer + Nefertiti) Push Push has greater (unintentional?) comic value. So I'll go with that one. Edited August 26, 2021 by HutchFan Quote
Larry Kart Posted August 26, 2021 Report Posted August 26, 2021 I like Timmons, but Perkins had a unique soulful approach. Quote

I quote this not be a troll, but because John is John, and I pretty much agree with him. From a 1964 John Litweiler review of "Criss Cross" (Columbia): "Frankie Dunlop is certainly the major liability in this quartet. He is an exceptionally facile drummer, but it is amazing how a drummer can be so insensitive to Monk's playing. He has learned all the tricks from Roach, Blakey, Philly Joe, Elvin Jones, Baby Dodds, Joe Podunk and the rest of the gang, and he feels compelled to use every trick in his voluminous bag on every song he plays. It seems that way, anyway; good intentions do not a drummer make. John Ore is an asset to the group, in spite of his unwillingness to solo (he has an appealing habit of playing his solo choruses entirely in double stops); since he plays slightly on top of the beat, he keeps show-off Dunlop from dragging the tempo." Not unlike my feelings about Dunlop. Might be a Chicago thing. I suppose it is too much to hope for discovery of the first few takes from the Monk's Music date when Wilbur Campbell filled in for the tardy Art Blakey. Quote
