Dr. Lonnie Smith. Not even in the same universe. Lonnie Liston Smith is one of the worst famous musicians I've ever seen in person (right up there with Bobbi Humphrey)..

Dr. Lonnie, no question, both for his own playing and the company he's kept

meh on both Wild Bills for their own playing, but the organist was part of something bigger, and I can enjoy them both in context

George the trombonist even though I once saw him be an asshat to an audience - he holds News For Lulu together.  George the clarinet player has never done much for me even though I love polyphony and players like Johnny Dodds.

I'd go with the good Doctor too -- by a considerable margin.  But I think Lonnie Liston Smith sounds pretty darn good on those early Gato Barbieri records for Flying Dutchman.  That's his best work, IMO.  His solo stuff has never grabbed me.

Do not jump to conclusions. Mel Cooley holds up really well, even if he never did win a Pulitzer.

And do note that not only was he Mel Cooley, he was also Fred Rutherford. so, this "dual identity" thing that Mel Powell had, not as unique as we might think.

Just let it marinade for a while, that's all I'm saying.

Ethel Merman.  I have the Tucker release on Archeophone and it's not all that interesting musically; her story's fascinating and she's historically important, but musically she was that era's equivalent to Mylie Cyrus.  Ethel Merman was a force of nature.
