HutchFan Posted August 18, 2021 Report Posted August 18, 2021 I'm resurrecting a thread from the long-defunct AAJ board. It's simple idea, but it sometimes prompted some good discussion. And it's always interesting to see what people's preferences are, how they compare to your own. Since this is in the Miscellaneous Music section, let's limit ourselves to music -- but it doesn't necessarily have to be jazz. Some examples: - Rollins or Coltrane? (the classic duality) - Dylan or Joni? (the classic duality, singer-songwriter edition) - The Stones or The Who? (the classic duality, rock edition) - Dewey Redman or Don Redman? (wordplay is always a plus) - Atlantic Jazz in the 60s or Atlantic Jazz in the 70s? (the label thing, the decade thing) When you make a choice, you can provide a rationale, if you'd like -- but it's not required. Then you provide the next set of choices, and so it goes, leapfrogging along. I'll go first: Chu Berry or Herschel Evans? Quote

jazzbo Posted August 18, 2021 Report Posted August 18, 2021 Paul/Saul definitely. Without one many would know little of the other. Quote

Therefore: Billy Sol Estes (I don't know him but I know who Kefauver was from history/Poli Sci.) So: Percy France or Percy, France Quote

Niko Posted August 18, 2021 Report Posted August 18, 2021 The Duke John McLaughlin or Stanley Clarke? Quote
HutchFan Posted August 18, 2021 Author Report Posted August 18, 2021 Stanley Clarke - for his early 70s stuff. Ira Sullivan or Red Rodney? Quote
Rabshakeh Posted August 18, 2021 Report Posted August 18, 2021 Should there be an answer to these questions? Quote
HutchFan Posted August 19, 2021 Author Report Posted August 19, 2021 Probably not. How about what I asked earlier: Ira Sullivan or Red Rodney? Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted August 19, 2021 Report Posted August 19, 2021 On two part singles, I most often prefer part two. I'll take Ira Sullivan over the great Red Rodney on purely musical terms, but Red has a more interesting life story than damned near anyone and I once saw him play the 'I played with Bird card' without actually playing it, if you know what I mean. Coleman Hawkins or Lester Young? Quote

Coleman Hawkins or Lester Young? Lester And Basie, to answer my own question. And now: Allen Eager or Brew Moore? Quote

Peter Friedman Posted August 19, 2021 Report Posted August 19, 2021 Hutch Fan, I thought this was meant to be a serious thread, but after reading most of the posts it has become just silliness that does interest me. Too bad, I thought it might be an interesting thread. Quote
