Late Posted August 15, 2021 Report Posted August 15, 2021 It looks like Universal Japan is planning a fairly extensive reissue campaign of select Blue Note, Pacific Jazz, Liberty, Verve, EmArcy, Impulse!, and Capitol titles. Two batches slated so far: October 20, 2021 November 11, 2021 Looks like some Transition, Argo, Cadet, and United Artists titles too. And one or two Solid State, Decca, and East Wind titles ... Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted August 15, 2021 Report Posted August 15, 2021 I'll check it out when they hit CD Japan. Maybe I'll pick up Tyrone Washington's "Natural Essence" for the 4th time. Quote
Late Posted August 15, 2021 Author Report Posted August 15, 2021 (edited) Nice to see some Adderley Capitol titles reissued again. The Live! date with Charles Lloyd is very good; this will be only the second time it's been out on compact disc (as far as I know). The previous Japanese reissue was around for about 11 minutes. First time for this Hamilton album on compact disc? I've never heard it. Edited August 15, 2021 by Late Hamilton Quote

But it won't be for everybody...nor should it be, as there's electricity involved! Here, see if you are instantly repelled. HutchFan Posted August 16, 2021 Report Posted August 16, 2021 I love that Chico record. Scorching hot Arthur Blythe.   I would also recommend this Cannonball album: Quote
JSngry Posted August 16, 2021 Report Posted August 16, 2021 I also see they're offering some LT Series records...ORIGINAL COVERS!!!!! LOL!!!! Quote
felser Posted August 16, 2021 Report Posted August 16, 2021 Fills some BN holes (especially some 70's titles) nicely for me. Especially glad to see Turrentine's "In Memory Of", which will enable to to sell off the Mosaic. Have to check out some of those Cannonball's. Quote

Late Posted August 16, 2021 Author Report Posted August 16, 2021 I've never dealt with this one. Maybe it's time ...  33 minutes ago, felser said: Have to check out some of those Cannonball's. Adderley's Capitol output (well, what I've heard) is uniformly excellent. Accent On Africa is very good. So is the above-mentioned 74 Miles Away. My favorite is actually The Happy People, but I think I'm in the minority on that recording. I'm guessing you've heard/own The Black Messiah? That's the one, in my opinion, that's truly essential, warts-and-all (and there are definitely some warts). In Person is also very good, with cameos by Lou Rawls and Nancy Wilson. Quote
JSngry Posted August 16, 2021 Report Posted August 16, 2021 I don't know about "uniformly excellent" in terms of "jazz record", you'd probably get a lo of disgruntled pushback about that...but not from me, because...do you get unhappy with a pair of pants because it's not a shirt? After that, though... they're all very interesting, especially in retrospect and especially on retrospect as Cannonball's playing just slowly but surely evolves in both sound and substance. The records are almost all "product", but Cannonball was, I think, cool with that because, quiet as it's kept, Cannonball was very much a Black Businessman as much as he was a Purveyor Of Black Musical Entertainment Art. For him, "commercial" was not a disparagement, it was an aim, and that meant variety on BOTH ends of the spectrum. And while all that was going on, he kept giving Joe Zawinul his head. For every "Oh Babe", there's a 74 Miles Away. Again, quiet as it's kept, there was a LOT brewing on that band. Miles did not own the patent on brewing! Just know what you're listening to and you'll have a great time figuring it all out. Listen for what you think it ought to be, you're liable to be miserable, or worse! Quote

Agreed on this and the live album with Lloyd being really good. Â I also enjoy the studio recording Fiddler on the Roof. Quote

bertrand Posted August 16, 2021 Report Posted August 16, 2021 How do we get the word out to them that Young Men From Memphis has an extra track? The mono take of Things Ain't What... is DIFFERENT than the stereo take. Ben Young discovered this... Quote

T.D. Posted August 16, 2021 Report Posted August 16, 2021 (edited) Thanks, I independently noticed some of these on DG's "Coming Soon" page. The one I put on "send arrival notice" for now is (I like '70s Haig and this has Billy Higgins on drums): Edited August 16, 2021 by T.D. Quote

bertrand Posted August 16, 2021 Report Posted August 16, 2021 The Argo date I would like to see on CD is Thornel Schwartz's Soul Cookin' with Larry Young (under the pseudonym Lawrence Olds). Quote
