DMP Posted June 19, 2021 Report Posted June 19, 2021 I recently read high praise for Norvo’s band of this period, comparing them favorably to Ellington, Basie and Goodman. I’m not at all familiar with this part of Norvo’s career. Can someone point out a good introduction? (I’m assuming Mildred Bailey is heavily featured, which is fine, but I’d be more curious about strict instrumentals.) Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted June 19, 2021 Report Posted June 19, 2021 (edited) This is a fine collection covering 1936-39. IIRC, Bailey sings on fewer than half the titles. Edited June 19, 2021 by Chuck Nessa Quote
DMP Posted June 19, 2021 Author Report Posted June 19, 2021 Thanks! Just what I’m looking for. (Any opinions on the band?) Quote
Brad Posted June 20, 2021 Report Posted June 20, 2021 This one is good: Red Norvo and His Orchestra – Rock It For Me – Hep 1040. 1937-1938 Performances. Quote
mjzee Posted June 20, 2021 Report Posted June 20, 2021 I have this on vinyl, and it also came out on CD. Given that Portrait was a CBS label, it wouldn't surprise me if it has similarities to Chuck's suggestion. Quote
