The sound quality is LIGHT YEARS better than the Black Lion CD issue I’ve had for 15 years, and quite a bit better than the burn of some LP version that board member Spontooneous made for me years ago. I feel like I’m finally hearing this session almost for the first time, reason especially being that I could barely stomach listening to the Black Lion version much all these years. Was it worth $25? Probably not, but no regrets at all now that the money’s spent and gone. And certainly absolutely NO regrets in terms of the upgrade in sound quality — which is like night and day. That Black Lion CD version had to have been the very worst-sounding studio recording I’ve ever heard. 1 hour ago, Rooster_Ties said: Addendum: The main 4-track original album of Brilliant Circles sounds amazing, but the 2 bonus tracks sound a lot like the Black Lion version. Lot clearer sound on them, but Tyrone is still buried in the mix (just like the entire Black Lion CD, entire session), but the rest of the band sounds a better on those 2 tracks -- you just can't hear Tyrone any better than before (just on the bonus tracks). Still, the main album does sound pretty fantastic, so the glass is 80% full I guess. Many thanks for the helpful comments. I have the Black Lion CD and agree about the woeful SQ. Considered purchasing this reissue, but held off because I didn't see any reviews mentioning improved sonics. Too late now (sold out, my fault for failing to carpe diem), but I'll buy a reasonably priced used copy if one surfaces. Still showing "in stock" at DG, ordered! Maybe the most I've ever paid for a single CD, but I just finished my tax return and have a surprising refund coming, call it a YOLO buy. Edited August 10, 2021 by T.D. Glad you may have gotten one! — pending order confirmation, of course. DG seems to have this series coming in and out of stock periodically, but hard to say for how much longer — so I was gonna suggest creating a product alert so you’d get an email the next time they got it in (though that’s no guarantee, if you can’t move fast enough sometimes). Also very glad you saw my feedback about the bonus tracks, so you made your purchase decision fully informed.

I had a product alert for the disc once before, but it sold out before I made up my mind. I used to maintain a lot of product alerts at DG, but switched to using a watch list because I was getting too many tempting e-mails about pricey Japanese reissues. Your comments on sonics were absolutely spot on, and I'm happy with the purchase.
mjzee
Still waiting for DG to receive another shipment of the Cowell.
colinmce
DG has massively reduced these @ 8.99 apiece. They have quite a few titles in stock still, including Cowell, Andrew Hill, Tchicai, Jym Young, AEC, Marion Brown etc etc.
clifford_thornton
if one doesn't have these yet, one should pick them up. I am "ride or die" for the Jym Young and the Tchicai is a longtime favorite as well.
colinmce
Finally grabbed the Jym Young, looking forward to hearing it for the first time.
T.D.
Noticed this late (independent of this thread, only last night). Picked up the Noah Howard and Jym Young. Beyond the Freedom[/Muzak] series and in more straight-ahead mode, there are a whole bunch of attractive Japanese reissues also on the Muzak label. I went for Dusko Goykovich Swinging Macedonia (w. Nathan Davis, Mal Waldron) and Dusko Goykovich w. Tete Montoliu Trio Ten to Two Blues. Could have purchased a lot more, but held back due to recent overspending. 😶 Edited July 18 by T.D. clifford_thornton
Both of those Goykovich albums are killer. Swinging Macedonia is a hard hitting classic -- have that on a UK Lansdowne LP. Is Muzak just a licensing label? Seems like they're getting material from ENJA, DA Music, and who knows where else.

JSngry
Perhaps...but I've bern been doing 7 buck Bandcamp DLs of new musics (not all of which I love, now I know instead of assuming)...I already love Tchichai, if you know what I mean, and I don't really see this particular one talked about all that much. But let me know, please!
romualdo
bought a lot of those at the full price back when but just ordered a few more at this price ie two Aylers, AEC (Spiritual), Duke Pearson & Feather presents George Wallington Highly recommend the Konitz Storyville 2CD set - contains the three LPs plus extra material - absolute bargain at this price https://www.dustygroove.com/item/948926/Lee-Konitz:Lee-Konitz-At-Storyville-At-Harvard-Square-Konitz-Japanese-paper-sleeve-edition?sf=lee+konitz&incl_oos=1&incl_cs=1&kwfilter=lee+konitz&sort_order=artist
Rooster_Ties
Yeah, that Kontiz set is really great! Got the issue of it in this series a couple years ago (at full price), and it’s as high-quality a reissue of this material as there ever was — and now a steal for a double-CD for $8.99. jazzbo
Indeed. The Griffin, Brookmeyer/Sims, Webster, Jackie & Roy and Gordon sets are also excellent. Best I have ever heard this material. Edited July 19 by jazzbo

There isn't a whole lot out there like it. My holy grail is the collaborative session of CND and Musica Elettronica Viva. Tchicai had clean master tapes and was getting them digitized when I interviewed him, but his untimely death put the kibosh on a release. Hopefully someday... colinmce
They just added the rest of the Freedom & Fontana titles; went back for another big stack and now I think I can tap out. clifford_thornton
Children of the Sun's "Ofamfa" is a great, great album, perhaps my favorite of the Universal Justice/BAG releases.

I just ordered the AEC, Barbieri/Band, Cowell, Noah Howard, Steve Kuhn and Jym Young titles yesterday (I already own several others in different Freedom/Black Lion CD releases), and now I have to go look again at the additions! This board is an expensive place to hang out sometimes!
clifford_thornton
Every one of the Fontana/Freedom/Polydor LPs that Alan Bates had his hand in is worth owning and listening to. Can't speak for the Steve Kuhn on Buddha, however -- different thing entirely.
