I'm sorry to hear that. I have a vinyl rip of the album that I've listened to for years. The session sounds like it was recorded in a large hall with no one ever getting very close to a mike. Tchicai's alto comes through cleanly but still recessed. The percussion sound is often muddy. Lower horns are also recessed but still fairly clear. It's definitely an album that takes some adjusting to — both musically and sonically. Maybe after a few more spins your ears will begin to "accept" the album's recessed quality (e.g. "Why did you have to record on the other side of the airplane hangar, John?"), and then the album will be more enjoyable. But, I understand, first impressions count for a lot.
clifford_thornton
I have an original Polydor UK pressing of the Tchicai and that's how it was recorded. I always really liked the sonics -- the murkiness adds to the mystery. I don't think it could be improved upon too much.

According to discogs, it’s only been on CD twice (is that right?)... I have the 1995 German Black Lion CD, and despite the material being amazing, the mix and/or mastering is just horrid. A buddy burned me a copy of his LP (and it’s better) — but I’ve always wondered if the 1994 Japanese CD issue was any better. If this is a substantial upgrade, I’d be very interested — but I’ll be waiting for some first feedback before I drop any dime on a new copy. Thank you! Listening on my iMac + Sennheisers to the FLACs of the Black Lion CD I downloaded today and comparing them to RiRilll's sample, it seems like the problem with the saxophone on Brilliant Circles has been solved. I've ordered Japanese CDs through him a couple of times. Shipping is cheap, but his prices for the CDs are a bit high sometimes. He also has a brick-and-mortar so sometimes items that are listed are unavailable. Other than that, Amazon Japan. Shipping is ¥1490 with AmazonGlobal International Shipping (Priority). Total would be ¥3790, about €28.50. Expected delivery date 9-11 June. Before the new VAT import laws take effect on 1 July. (All imports, also below €22 item value, will be taxed from now on.) RiRiIII
I only buy from Am JP when ordering from Japan. They charge all import fees/taxes beforehand. Much lower than what I would have to pay as individual to DHL myself in Greece (they charge 50EUR handling fee!). So the order is DDP. DHL only needs my approval to clear the customs with ZERO charge. The same day the order ships DHL sends am email asking for such approval. Depending on the order volume the shipping+taxes/fees varies from 20 to 30% of the value of the items. Good value for 5-day delivery time! erwbol
Is Am Jp's packaging better than Am US or EU? Somewhere between that and CD Japan perhaps?

Sometimes CDs are "sealed" by polyethylene to a sturdy cardboard, which is OK. Sometimes the CDs come just packed in regular flimsy (single-layer) cardboard. Then you should expect some cracked jewel cases. In any case, this is not CDJapan level of packaging. This is how it came recently, for example. This was all the packaging. 20210605_101124.jpg - OneDrive (live.com) Edited June 5, 2021 by Д.Д.
