ralphie_boy Posted March 21, 2004 Report Posted March 21, 2004 Been revisiting the Stones lately and wondering what your favorite session is from the late 60's thru the mid seventies - their best period IMO. Quote
Bright Moments Posted March 21, 2004 Report Posted March 21, 2004 i know "exile" will win the poll, but i had to vote for Goat head soup! love that "ANGIE" Quote
Big Al Posted March 21, 2004 Report Posted March 21, 2004 (edited) Beggar's Banquet. No contest. "Stray Cat Blues," "Jigsaw Puzzle," "Salt of the Earth," all the great acoustic stuff, and, oh yeah, "Sympathy for the Devil" AND "Street Fighting Man." What an album! Eric Posted March 21, 2004 Report Posted March 21, 2004 (edited) I like Ya-Ya's ... more or less a greatest hits from this period, plus some Chuck Berry tunes. It is their best live album at that. Sympathy blows away the studio version! Eric Edited March 21, 2004 by Eric Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted March 21, 2004 Report Posted March 21, 2004 I love 'Sticky Fingers'. Great songs, great performances. And "Can you hear me knocking" has a fabulous extended guitar section. I really like the two before but just find a few tracks on both don't grab me. "Exile" is great too though more blurred to my ears. (Before and) After that my Stones listening is just the singles. 7/4 Posted March 21, 2004 Report Posted March 21, 2004 I voted for Beggar's Banquet, but it's a close call, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers and Exile on Main Street are great too. Quote
rachel Posted March 21, 2004 Report Posted March 21, 2004 (edited) Sticky Fingers... because of the album cover alone... Edited March 21, 2004 by rachel Quote
BruceH Posted March 21, 2004 Report Posted March 21, 2004 My all-time favorite is Aftermath---why isn't it on the list? Quote
GregK Posted March 21, 2004 Report Posted March 21, 2004 man, you can't go wrong with any of those selections; I picked Exile because it's a double album so there's more music, but really I find all of them to be representative of the Stones at their best (even Goat's Head Soup!!). Anyone have any comments on the recent SACDs of their 60s reissues? Quote
paul secor Posted March 21, 2004 Report Posted March 21, 2004 Exile got my vote. One of the few Stones records I still listen to. They come off like a Southern roadhouse band on this one. Quote
Jazzmoose Posted March 21, 2004 Report Posted March 21, 2004 Beggar's Banquet is the tops for me, although Sticky Fingers isn't that far behind. Anything after Exile's is second rate Stones as far as I'm concerned. Quote
Brandon Burke Posted March 22, 2004 Report Posted March 22, 2004 My all-time favorite is Aftermath---why isn't it on the list? Me too......so I chose Satanic. Quote
DTMX Posted March 22, 2004 Report Posted March 22, 2004 Let It Bleed. My favorite part is during the title track where the rest of the band moves to the E7th but one of the guitarists stays on the C for an extra two beats - OUTRAGEOUS!! Must have been one of those things they could 'fix in the mix' and forgot to. Quote
dave9199 Posted March 22, 2004 Report Posted March 22, 2004 It is tough, but I voted for Let It Bleed for strong songs although most of the list has that. If you took half of Goats Head Soup & half of It's Only Rock & Roll, that would've been a great album. Quote
chris olivarez Posted March 22, 2004 Report Posted March 22, 2004 i know "exile" will win the poll, but i had to vote for Goat head soup! love that "ANGIE" We are totally opposite on this one. I view that paticular album and song as an official period of decline for the group. Quote
ralphie_boy Posted March 22, 2004 Author Report Posted March 22, 2004 For me it's a toss-up between LET IT BLEED and STICKY FINGERS. No real reason why I didn't include AFTERMATH, I just decided to start with SATANIC... from 1967. Quote
Parkertown Posted March 22, 2004 Report Posted March 22, 2004 I stuck up for ya Evan! I'm vote #2 for Goats Head Soup. I'm kinda burnt on the others. Goats Head Soup is super diverse too. All over the place. B) I like "Heartbreaker" "Dancing With Mr. D" "Silver Train". The bassline on "Silver Train" is DEEP! Oh yeah, and "Star, fuck a Star, fuck a Star, fuck a Star, fuck a Star"! Clunky Posted March 22, 2004 Report Posted March 22, 2004 I went for "Let it Bleed", best album they have ever made? At school 20 odd years ago the photographer and artistic director responsible for the "Let it Bleed" cover came to give a talk on commercial photography. Apparently the Stones ( or some of them) were present at the photo shoot. The album back cover shows the "cake" from the front all smashed up. Once the cover photos had been taken Keith R wanted to wreck the "cake" for the back cover and had to be persuaded that in fact the destruction had to be more orderly. Classic tunes, classic cover, Quote
ralphie_boy Posted March 22, 2004 Author Report Posted March 22, 2004 Oh yeah, and "Star, fuck a Star, fuck a Star, fuck a Star, fuck a Star"! I like GHS - That's the one that makes the album for me! Quote
jazzbo Posted March 22, 2004 Report Posted March 22, 2004 As an outcast I had to vote for Exile. Quote
Dr. Rat Posted March 22, 2004 Report Posted March 22, 2004 Beggar's Banquet for the less radio-friendly stuff: No Expectations, Prodigal Son, Salt of the Earth. This album had a touch of something rarely seen in Stones albums: humility. They didn't get carried away with it though! --eric Quote
Brandon Burke Posted March 22, 2004 Report Posted March 22, 2004 Exile has always sounded silly to me. I doesn't sound as much like a the rock classic to these ears as it does to others. I'm not at all impressed by drunk and strung out rock music. Quote
