clifford_thornton Posted April 5, 2021 Report Posted April 5, 2021 Was this material recorded at the Stone? I heard about those concerts but did not attend. Quote
cliffpeterson Posted April 5, 2021 Report Posted April 5, 2021 This material was recorded at Bill Laswell's studio in New Jersey in 2015 and 2016. http://www.tumrecords.com/release/box-003-sacred-ceremonies This release is part of Tum Records' celebration of Wadada Leo Smith's 80th birthday. Quote
tranemonk Posted April 5, 2021 Report Posted April 5, 2021 Anybody know where I can listen to some sound clips on this? I don't think Tum records does bandcamp. I need to give this a preview before I delve in... thanks. Quote
mjazzg Posted April 5, 2021 Report Posted April 5, 2021 I reckon Squidco will be your best bet when they list it. I've not see a TUM Bandcamp presence either Quote
randyhersom Posted May 25, 2021 Report Posted May 25, 2021 Amazon showing June 5 ship date for Sacred Ceremonies and Trumpet. Quote
russes01 Posted May 26, 2021 Report Posted May 26, 2021 Arrived from Amazon today - not yet played. Quote
JSngry Posted May 26, 2021 Report Posted May 26, 2021 Crap, just saw the price point, didn't notice that it was 3CDs, ordered now. DOH. Quote
corto maltese Posted May 28, 2021 Report Posted May 28, 2021 I am tempted, but have yet to overcome my aversion to Laswell. Quote
JSngry Posted May 30, 2021 Report Posted May 30, 2021 Just finished the first disc, the duets with Milford...Milford was truly amazing. Not "amazing", amazing. So much independence of limbs/times, physically and mentally, it takes an especially learned and evolve human to get to this/those place(s). Quote
JSngry Posted May 31, 2021 Report Posted May 31, 2021 2nd disc, duets with Laswell, I actually found "easier" to listen to. Laswell functions more as "context provider", which works just fine here. Milford is not just four bands in one, he's more more than that, more than just one band per limb, he does so much with each limb within itself, I really could not stop listening to him and just him. Not that Wadada "got in the way" or anything like that, just that...I don't know of any living human who could single-handedly, in real time, on a monophonic instrument, match up with all those neural impulses being so perfectly speaking at once, it seems impossible and maybe it is. So I need to adjust back in to what is actually happening, hear it all at once. But that is going to take a lot of discipline on my part because....wow, Milford. All of which means that Disc 3 tomorrow is going to be interesting, to say the least! Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted May 31, 2021 Report Posted May 31, 2021 The set has been on my desk for a few days but I have been otherwise involved. Maybe I will jump in tomorrow afternoon while Stephen Haynes is here. Quote
JSngry Posted May 31, 2021 Report Posted May 31, 2021 3 CDs is a lot, and Milford is a full time listen by himself. Quote

LWayne Posted June 5, 2021 Report Posted June 5, 2021 Really enjoying this after the first spin. Particularly the first CD-Milford Graves and Wadada Leo Smith duo. MIlford's drumming is a force of nature, as always. Thumbs up! LWayne Quote

Hope you and the family are faring well around the 'big snow storm.' And the subject at hand - the recording. I have not listened, though I would, I suppose. Though I did 'study' with Professor Graves, I have not followed his music past a certain time period. Have always found the price point on the label to be high. Perhaps if I understood how/if that high price signifies income for the participating artists, I might be convinced to buy in and purchase. I have the trio with Enrico Rava, Cyrille and Parker. Joe Morris gave me his copy, suggested I listen to it, the the sound reminded him of certain things/people. Anyway, I am off topic. Or maybe not. Quote
