If you were to make a list of your "desert-island discs" from the 1980s, what would they be?

The only rules:
- The music must have been recorded between January 1, 1980 and December 31, 1989.
- Release dates don't matter; archival recordings are fine, as long as they were made in the 1980s.

List however many records you wish. One or ten or fifty.

To get the ball rolling, here are five that would go on my list:

- Andrew Hill - Shades (Soul Note)
- Bobby Hutcherson - Farewell Keystone (Theresa/Evidence)
- James Newton - Luella (Gramavision)
- Quest - Quest II (Storyville)
- Jack Walrath - Wholly Trinity (Muse)

Yeah, probably.  ;)

I have a friend who wants to collaborate with me on an 80s jazz project.  But I'm not anywhere near ready to begin yet.

At this point, we're just kicking around ideas.  But I think something will happen eventually.

So what would be on YOUR 80s jazz list, Rab?

Woody Shaw  ‘Lotus Flower’ (Enja)

Neil Swainson ‘49th Parallel’ (Concord)

Jackie McLean ‘Dynasty’ (Triloka)

Hilton Ruiz ‘El Camino’ (RCA Novus)

Tony Williams ‘Civilization’ (Blue Note)

Andrew Hill ‘But Not Farewell’ (Blue Note)

Dave Holland ‘Extensions’ (ECM)

Pat Metheny ‘Rejoicing’ (ECM)

Ralph Peterson ‘Introducing the Fo’Tet’ (Blue Note)

All standouts, for me.

Stan Getz was on a roll in the 1980's.  Each of these albums is worthy of mention --

Thnx, missed this extended rules .... thought about this release yesterday and - as you can witness via the "Jazz Listening" thread - felt motivated for a re-play :D ....

This one certainly is more up my alley than the 70s was.

Just thought of a few of many:

Al Cohn: Rifftide (Timeless), No Problem (Xanadu)

relatedly, Don Joseph, One of a Kind (Uptown)

Brian Lynch: Peer Pressure (Criss Cross)

Ralph Moore: Round Trip (Reservoir)

Mulgrew Miller: Work (Landmark)

Scott Hamilton, Tenor Shoes (Concord)

20th Concord Festival All-Stars (Concord) - Ray Brown Trio  w. Gene Harris plus Sweets and Red Holloway - how can you go wrong?

Ray Brown Trio, BAM BAM BAM (Concord) - the definitive performance of Summertime by Gene Harris contained therein.
