It took a little while - quite a while actually, seeing the date on Niko's post but I actually heard from the author of this excellent thesis about BJP. He was happy to help and gave the thumbs up on all of it - said the photo is him, the voice is him, and his musical style is heard in his solo. No doubt in his mind.

So that's 4 for 4 saying its Big John Patton one one basis or another. Not that I really needed a fourth source, but here it is.
