clifford_thornton Posted January 7, 2021 Report Posted January 7, 2021 sad news from his colleagues -- the great pianist Bobby Few has died in Paris at age 85. I was just thinking about him the other day as I went back through a tape of an interview I did with him, wherein he played as we chatted over the phone. Really nice guy and an amazing player -- saw him twice, once in duo with Avram Fefer and once in a quartet led by Noah Howard. The Frank Wright/Center of the World recordings he participated in are desert island discs for me. Ditto his work with Steve Lacy. RIP. Quote
mjazzg Posted January 7, 2021 Report Posted January 7, 2021 That's a great shame. Love the Center of the World recordings Quote
JSngry Posted January 7, 2021 Report Posted January 7, 2021 Indeed - great. And this is a great loss, a voice stilled. Quote
jlhoots Posted January 7, 2021 Report Posted January 7, 2021 Even played with Booker Ervin. R.I.P. Quote
Pim Posted January 7, 2021 Report Posted January 7, 2021 That is sad news. Great piano player. Love his playing with Noah Howard and Frank Wright. And of course with Lacy. Rest In Peace mr Few. Quote
soulpope Posted January 7, 2021 Report Posted January 7, 2021 Created great music .... R.I.P .... Quote
Rabshakeh Posted January 7, 2021 Report Posted January 7, 2021 Those Frank Wright and Noah Howard discs are some of my absolute favourites because of Bobby Few's playing. His melodic sensibility was pretty unique in the free jazz world at that time. It made those records sweet as well as salty. R.I.P. Very sad news. Quote
OliverM Posted January 7, 2021 Report Posted January 7, 2021 (edited) Sad! I will be looking out for obituaries in the French Press tomorrow (will be getting Libé). Loved his playing. I would be very interested in reading more about his path. Very lucky to have seen him twice in Paris, once with the Arkestra and another time, with Rasul Siddik, Harry Swift and William Hooker. Both memorable moments! Good article and playlist by Pierre Crépon on The Wire, Steve Lacy is to be trusted on Few: https://www.thewire.co.uk/audio/tracks/wire-playlist-from-cleveland-to-paris-the-many-sides-of-bobby-few Edited January 7, 2021 by OliverM Quote
kh1958 Posted January 7, 2021 Report Posted January 7, 2021 I always liked his playing and saw him once with Steve Lacy and another time with Avram Fefer. Quote
felser Posted January 7, 2021 Report Posted January 7, 2021 RIP. I really like the solo "Continental Jazz Express" as well as much of his sideman work. Way too much by him that I have never heard. Quote
