felser Posted January 1, 2021 Report Posted January 1, 2021 I like the Nik Bartsch titles I have heard. Not much use for the label overall at this late date. Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted January 1, 2021 Report Posted January 1, 2021 (edited) Trio Beyond - Saudades (Tony Williams Lifetime tribute) Enrico Rava - On the Dance Floor (Michael Jackson tribute) Edited January 1, 2021 by danasgoodstuff Quote

Not much use for the label overall at this late date. Yeah, that's actually why I made it specific to the 21st century. Most of the time when people list their favorite ECM records, there's a lot of stuff from back in the 1970s. Given how much music ECM puts out, I figured there's probably some good stuff that I've missed. Quote
Dub Modal Posted January 1, 2021 Report Posted January 1, 2021 Did Stanko ever make a bad album? Even if he's a sideman I'm down for it. Quote
mjazzg Posted January 1, 2021 Report Posted January 1, 2021 I agree about Stanko, definitely. Also, everything by Anouar Brahem is of a consistently high standard. Louis Sclavis has hit a rich seam too. Other artists that have released strong albums are Misha Alperin, John Surman, Stefano Battaglia, Enrico Rava, Christian Wallumrod, Markku Ounaskari, Francois Couturier, Tim Berne, Michael Formanek, Giovanni Guidi and I could easily go on. Any drop off for me has been in the last five years or so Quote
mjazzg Posted January 1, 2021 Report Posted January 1, 2021 Don't know how I forgot Dino Saluzzi whose recent 'Albores' is a quiet masterpiece Quote
Guy Berger Posted January 2, 2021 Report Posted January 2, 2021 Favorites: Paul Motian, I Have the Room Above Her Billy Hart, One Is the Other Charles Lloyd, Lift Every Voice David Torn, Prezens David Torn, Sun of Goldfinger Tim Berne, Incidentals Michael Formanek, The Rub and Spare Change Fly, Year of the Snake Lee Konitz, Live at Birdland Vijay Iyer, Far from Over Jack DeJohnette, Made in Chicago Mark Turner, Lathe of Heaven Michael Formanek, The Distance Tim Berne, The Shadow Man Tim Berne, You’ve Been Watching Me Paul Motian, Lost in a Dream Charles Lloyd, Rabo de Nube Quote
felser Posted January 2, 2021 Report Posted January 2, 2021 I also really like "Rabo De Nube" by Lloyd, and "Athens Concert" is amazingly good in spots. His work in general has been miraculous on ECM and then Blue Note, given that I was one of the many who had written him off as a burnout case in the early 70's. Quote

felser Posted January 2, 2021 Report Posted January 2, 2021 Yes, the Dave Holland titles are sttong. Quote
Pim Posted January 2, 2021 Report Posted January 2, 2021 Funny to see how so many mention American names exclusively with such a European label. But I know the ECM sound isn’t much appreciated here. Quote

GregK Posted January 2, 2021 Report Posted January 2, 2021 I've been really enjoying a lot of the recent ECM titles. I just wish I had time and money to explore more of what's been released over the past few years, but I've particularly liked these: Andy Sheppard- Movements in Colour Marilyn Crispell and David Rothenburg- One Dark Night I Left My Silent House Ketil Bjornstad- La Notte Marcin Wasilewski- January Sinikka Langeland- Starflowers, The half-finished heaven Markku Ounaskari, Samuli Mikkonen, Per Jørgensen- Kuara Misha Alperin- Her First Dance Anouar Brahem- The Astounding Eyes of Rita Quote
porcy62 Posted January 2, 2021 Report Posted January 2, 2021 (edited) Too many, BUT agree about Stanko, no sloppy records AFIK, I would add Charles Lloyd, Paul Motian and Dave Holland in the same league. Trovesi and Coscia strong records too. Both records of Jarrett and Haden are excellent IMMV. Edited January 2, 2021 by porcy62 Quote

B. Clugston Posted January 4, 2021 Report Posted January 4, 2021 I'm a big fan of Wolfgang Muthspiel's Where the River Goes and Barre Phillips' End to End. Quote
Patrick Posted February 20, 2021 Report Posted February 20, 2021 Carla Bley - The Lost Chords Find Paolo Fresu, Carla's Christmas Carols Ralph Alessi - Baida Michael Formanek - The Rub and Spare Change Charles Lloyd - Rabo de Nube Louis Sclavis - Dans la Nuit Tomasz Stanko - Soul of Things, Suspended Night, Wislawa Quote
Dub Modal Posted June 7, 2022 Report Posted June 7, 2022 If Face of the Bass was still around here, they’d probably keep this going beyond 2020…at least it would seem so. A good album from the last 2 years would include Jakob Bro’s Uma Elmo Quote
HutchFan Posted June 7, 2022 Report Posted June 7, 2022 Damn. So much incredible music out there. Torrents and cataracts. And all we can do is drink from our tiny cups. There's only so much room! Quote
JSngry Posted June 7, 2022 Report Posted June 7, 2022 I'm finding that the Bley/Swallow/Sheppard trio recordings are holding up quite well to a deeper scrutiny. Noting overtly flashy, but the insides are, like, structural steel. Quote
Milestones Posted June 7, 2022 Report Posted June 7, 2022 Mostly Coltrane--Steve Kuhn, with Lovano prominently featured. Quote
