mjzee
In listening to today's random music selection, I noticed that two albums had Billy Hart on drums: Nick Brignola's Raincheck, and Jimmy & Doug Raney's Stolen Moments. He seems to have popped up a lot lately, at least on my stereo. How many dates has this guy played on, anyway? And he always seems to offer the right accompaniment to whatever style of music's being created. So he definitely deserves his own "corner." What are some of your favorite Billy Hart dates? JSngry
Enhance is still a classic. One of the stronger debut leader albu ms.
medjuck
There's a lot of praise for Billy Hart in the novel "The Bear Comes Home". (Why am I writing in italics?)
jazzbo
Sometimes Hart's drumming (as an ex-drummer drummers work sometimes draw my attention) bothers me. . . most recently on one of the last Bobby Hutcherson leader dates. Accents on the snare that I would expect to go down in pitch go up, and sometimes vice versa. He's a great player.

JSngry
Enchance. I got it wrong then, I get it wrong still. But either way it's a great record. I hope it made the 70s blog.

JSngry
That's such a good record, and reached a broader jazz audience (if not a larger one, don't know how well it sold)...more people were knowing Dewey from Keith, and Pullen from Mingus, etc. but here's Oliver Lake, who a lot of people were not yet familiar with (unless they already were, if you know what I mean), in a very diverse program wonderfully performed and exquisitely recorded. I saw a lot of people who were hearing "freer" styles, maybe for the first time, on this record and liking it, maybe also for the first time, because of the overall structure of the record itself. Just a brilliant record in every way, imo. Horizon was a great label until, as the story goes, Quincy Jones heard the Revolutionary Ensemble record, took it to Herb Albert and asked him why he was putting money into THIS shit, after which, things got weird...but at least John Snyder was able to go and do Artist House for a while. So, I'll defend Quincy Jones against all the allegations of ghostwiters and all that, because sorry kids, that IS the way this business works if you want to have a large life. But still, fuck Quincy Jones for fucking up Horizon records.
Peter Friedman
Billy Hart is in many recordings by Stan Getz. This is one of my favorites with Getz and Hart together.
mr jazz
Nice guy. I literally sat right next to him which was an amazing percussion experience. We chatted between sets. He's from DC so a lot of his homies were in the audience. Don't overlook his work with the Cookers.

six string
He seems to be all over my record collection. So many times Ilook at the credits and the drummer is Billy Hart.

And of the 2 ECMs under Hart’s name, One Is the Other is really really great.

Oh yeah! That Charles Lloyd quartet with Bobo Stenson, Anders Jormin, and Hart was fantastic. *********** Another excellent Billy Hart sideman date: Mads Vinding Trio - Open Minds (Storyville, 2011) Hardly made a ripple at the time it was released -- but it's a GREAT record, IMO. JSngry
After Enchance, a little time passed, but he then did some interesting leader dates on Grammavision that cemented him, imo, as somebody who was always going to bring interesting, non-hackneyed concepts to his records. Guy Berger
Btw it’s kind of tangential to this thread but the version of “How Long Has This Been Going On” from Getz’s Blue Skies is incredible - my favorite version of that standard.
