French nutritionists give thumbs up to Big Mac

PARIS, France (Reuters) -- Want to stay fit and healthy?

Two top French nutritionists are telling people to go for a Big Mac and keep their fingers off the traditional French quiche.

In an unexpected message to a country priding itself on the superiority of its food, a new food guide praises the McDonald's burger for having a higher and healthier protein-to-fat ratio than France's Quiche Lorraine.

"Strangely enough, the products which are the most demonized are not necessarily the worst," Jean-Michel Cohen and Patrick Serog write in their book "Savoir Manger," in which they analyze 5,000 dishes available in shops and restaurants.

The verdict published this month comes as McDonald's launches a new campaign to add healthier food choices to its menus.

It has also said it is eliminating Supersize fries and soft drinks.

tuhtuhtuh! that was one of those silly, American translations to lure the prejudiced people into the cinéma! the actual title is of course "Les Carnets du Major Thompson," which the Brits diligently translated into "The Diary of Major Thompson."

me no stoopid! ;)

A Quiche Lorraine contains a lot of bacon and so it's not a surprise that the protein-to-fat ratio is worse than that of a hamburger.

But it would be extremely unusual to eat a Quiche every day, so it's fat content is not as relevant for the population's nutrition than that of burgers are today in the US and even in France.

I had to overhear a very misinformed long rant about the French from one of those myopic young Republicans this town has a lot of . . . including a lot of misinformation that must be travelling around about the Versailles treaty and even mentioning Napoleanic times! It was pure venomous racism, though this chump had NO CLUE that he was a racist. I just don't get this holier than thou attitude of the times at least in my neck of the wood by propaganda swallowing reactionaries! But then. . . it's probably just always there since Sumer.
