If you want these on CD, then these mono versions (and Mosaic's) are probably the way to go if the mastering is done right. Those old Candid CD reissues from the 90s don't sound great in stereo but they're the easiest to come by.

Serious question - why is this a big deal? I don't recall the stereo being so fucked up that it made me thirsty for mono?

IIRC, in the booklet to the Mosaic Mingus Candid box, Cuscuna made a point of saying they used mono masters (on some, not all, titles) because they were far more sonically satisfying than the stereos, which had way too much left-right stereo separation.

looks like the two extras on the "Mingus Presents" disc are previously unreleased AFAIK - they don't appear to be in the Mosaic set

not sure how accurate the Japanese translator appears

These bonus tracks are not mentioned in Lord and were not in the Mosaic. But they seem to stick to the original LPs instead of completing the sessions  - two more tracks were recorded at that session that were in the Mosaic and on a later fourh Candid CD.

My copy of 'Mingus Presents Mingus' turned up this morning.

The bad news is that the two extra tracks are simply the edited versions that were issued on a Candid single. So nothing really new.

The good news for me is that the sound is better than anything else I remember hearing. (I haven't heard my Barnaby LP for over 30 years and I don't own the Mosaic set)

Good news about the sound! My copies of the Mingus material won't arrive til the end of January or the beginning of February because I added to the order several discs coming out later in January to save on shipping.

I have heard that the Mosaic set has excellent sound for this session but I am afraid I have not heard it.

This one sounds good to me but I cannot compare it to the Mosaic, which I am sure you own.

Perhaps when you receive your copy you could let us know how it compares.

All the Mingus Candid discs have arrived in my household. I've only listened to Mingus, but it sounds very good. I don't have the Mosaic, but it is a noticeable improvement on a previous Japanese release I had. Only three, not five tracks, though.
