jazzbo Posted March 19, 2004 Report Posted March 19, 2004 (edited) I've ingnored this beautiful and talented pianist for too long, and I'm not sure why! I just hadn't thought to really check her out. . . . I'm making up for lost time. I've been buying her cds when I can. She has become one of my favorite interpreters of Monk; her version of "Four In One" on For the Moment for example. . . she submerses herself into the Monk world and then just remains herself as well. . . no easy trick. She has a beautiful touch and sound on the piano, and she writes interesting material, leads great sessions and arranges well. She's got it all! Edited March 19, 2004 by jazzbo Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted March 19, 2004 Report Posted March 19, 2004 Don't know Renee Rosnes? Have I got a website for you! www.JazzDiscography.com (!) Mike Quote
jazzbo Posted March 19, 2004 Author Report Posted March 19, 2004 (edited) Yeah, all props to you. . . . But I'm not a discographic reading kind of guy. Her webstie www.reneerosnes.com is a nice browse though! Edited March 19, 2004 by jazzbo Quote
randyhersom Posted March 19, 2004 Report Posted March 19, 2004 (edited) I like her on Howard Alden's Take Your Pick, particularly when they cover Herbie Nichols' The Gig. Her first Blue Note had some nice things on it, I haven't pulled out my cassette of that in too long. Edited March 19, 2004 by randyhersom Quote
sidewinder Posted March 19, 2004 Report Posted March 19, 2004 She has great touch and sound on the piano. Check out the new Gerald Wilson 'New York Big Band' CD which features Renee on about half of the tracks and she sounds totally at home in Gerald's arrangements. Saw her some years ago in one of JJ Johnson's last quintets - JJ always did have really great taste in his piano players. I believe that she was born in Western Canada (was it Saskatoon?) and was very active on the Canadian scene before moving to the US. Quote
Eric Posted March 19, 2004 Report Posted March 19, 2004 Her trio with strings is really nice - and I usually don't go for that sort of thing. Without Words, I believe it is called. OOP, but it shows up. Eric Quote
jazzbo Posted March 19, 2004 Author Report Posted March 19, 2004 I agree Eric, very nice arrangements! Quote
sidewinder Posted March 19, 2004 Report Posted March 19, 2004 Great work from her too on JJ Johnson's 'The Brass Orchestra', where her early classical training is clearly apparent. B) Quote
Simon Weil Posted March 19, 2004 Report Posted March 19, 2004 Talking about J.J. Johnson's late groups, Heroes - with Rosnes on piano - is a good record. Play that often. Simon Weil Quote
Guest ariceffron Posted March 19, 2004 Report Posted March 19, 2004 i saw her play w/ booby once. she is SO hot. she is also canadian i believe Quote
jazzbo Posted March 19, 2004 Author Report Posted March 19, 2004 Yes she IS Canadian. In the liner notes to one of these it mentions that she found her birth mother and I think found that she is of Indian descent. . . . She is a beautiful woman, indeed. Quote
Joe G Posted March 20, 2004 Report Posted March 20, 2004 I saw her with Joe Henderson in the mid-90's. Great show, and I was very impressed with Renee. Quote
sheldonm Posted March 20, 2004 Report Posted March 20, 2004 I saw her a couple years ago with James Moody, very nice! Quote
DrJ Posted March 20, 2004 Report Posted March 20, 2004 Yeah, Randy mentions that Howard Alden Concord date TAKE YOUR PICK - I'm generally not much of a Concord Jazz kind of guy but that one is really good. Lew Tabackin, Rosnes, Alden, and a wonderful array of tunes including a couple by Herbie Nichols. Well worth a listen. Quote
jazzmessenger Posted March 20, 2004 Report Posted March 20, 2004 I saw Renee Rosnes in Joe Henderson's group in '97 or '98. I didn't know her then. I saw her again in "The Drummonds" with her husband, Billy Drummond and bassist Ray Drummond. I can highly recommend their album released on 32 Jazz (originally on a Japanese label, I believe). I think another album by this group came out last year or so. Quote
GA Russell Posted March 20, 2004 Report Posted March 20, 2004 What is the correct pronunciation of her last name? Anybody know? Quote
Simon Weil Posted March 20, 2004 Report Posted March 20, 2004 (edited) What is the correct pronunciation of her last name? Anybody know? A rec.music.bluenote thread on this very question. Including, even, Rosnes' cousin. Simon Weil Edited March 20, 2004 by Simon Weil Quote

B. Goren. Posted April 7, 2005 Report Posted April 7, 2005 (edited) I just bought this week my first Renee Rosnes CD: Ancestors, with Chris Potter and Nicholas Payton. A Foster, Peter Washington & Don Alias also deserve credit. This is one of the best recordings I've recently listened to and I need more Renee in my collection. Edited April 7, 2005 by B. Goren. sheldonm Posted April 7, 2005 Report Posted April 7, 2005 I saw her perform last Friday with the SF Jazz Collective. Very good player! Quote
montg Posted April 7, 2005 Report Posted April 7, 2005 BG, that's also the first Rosnes CD I bought and my reaction was the same as yours. Besides Rosnes I thought Potter was very good; actually my first exposure to him I think. I picked up 'Life on earth' which has some really nice compositions..there's a little 'world music' stuff here and there, but it adds color and doesn't take away from RR's strengths. Quote

cannonball-addict Posted April 7, 2005 Report Posted April 7, 2005 (edited) I have ALL her albums (like 11) but my two favorites are her self-titled debut studio session on Blue Note "Renee Rosnes" (with her leaning against a yellow wall) because it has all those amazing cats (Branford, Wayne, Herbie, Lewis Nash, Ralph Bowen etc.) AND "Ancestors" (with Al Foster, Chris Potter, Peter Washington, Don Alias, Nick Payton, etc) which is dedicated to her then newly-discovered Native American heritage. -matt Edited April 7, 2005 by cannonball-addict Quote
