Mark Stryker Posted September 5, 2020 Report Posted September 5, 2020 (edited) Jack DeJohnette is reporting on Twitter that Gary Peacock has died. Edited September 7, 2020 by Mark Stryker Quote
mjazzg Posted September 5, 2020 Report Posted September 5, 2020 Oh no, what a contribution across so many years. Quote
soulpope Posted September 5, 2020 Report Posted September 5, 2020 What a tough loss .... R.I.P .... Quote
mjzee Posted September 5, 2020 Report Posted September 5, 2020 Jack DeJohnetteLike Page 58m Gary Peacock. It is with deep sadness that we mourn the passing of the great Gary Peacock. I had the good fortune to have spent over 30 years playing some amazing music with him both separately and the Trio with Keith Jarrett. Gary had a great sound, feel and highly creative imagination. It was Garys album on ECM, Tales of Another that brought us together, after that we decided to stay playing together, and the rest is history. I have a lot of love and gratitude for what he has contributed to the music we call Jazz. Lydia and I send our deepest love to the Peacock family you are in our hearts always. Quote
J.A.W. Posted September 5, 2020 Report Posted September 5, 2020 Very sad news, love his playing. Quote
JSngry Posted September 5, 2020 Report Posted September 5, 2020 A life certainly not wasted! RIP! Quote
Justin V Posted September 5, 2020 Report Posted September 5, 2020 I'm sorry to hear this. I caught Keith Jarrett's Standards Trio at what I think was their penultimate concert before they disbanded. It was the only time I saw Gary Peacock perform. He was represented well in the mix and I gained a greater appreciation for how much he added to the group, as he did to so many groups. Thank you for the music, Mr. Peacock, and rest in peace. Quote
Pim Posted September 5, 2020 Report Posted September 5, 2020 (edited) That truly is sad. A very big bass player. R.I.P. Edited September 5, 2020 by Pim Quote
Jason Bivins Posted September 5, 2020 Report Posted September 5, 2020 Wow, what a loss. Thank you for your artistry, sir. RIP. Quote
HutchFan Posted September 5, 2020 Report Posted September 5, 2020 So sorry to hear this sad news. R.I.P. and THANK YOU for the music. Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted September 5, 2020 Report Posted September 5, 2020 RIP, Gary. Thanks for the music. Quote
jazzbo Posted September 5, 2020 Report Posted September 5, 2020 Now there are reports that this is fake news. . . just as it was in May when it was reported to he had died. Quote

BFrank Posted September 5, 2020 Report Posted September 5, 2020 Still haven't seen a confirmation either way. FB folks are telling both sides of the story. Quote
ghost of miles Posted September 5, 2020 Report Posted September 5, 2020 (edited) What's the source for the report being false or a hoax, which Annette Peacock is tweeting as well? Hopefully not mediamass.net. (And hopefully he's still with us--seems odd that Jack DeJohnette would be taken in, though.) EDIT: I don't see any tweet about Gary Peacock on DeJohnette's recent Twitter feed--so if it was posted there originally, he's deleted it. Edited September 5, 2020 by ghost of miles Quote
jazzbo Posted September 6, 2020 Report Posted September 6, 2020 My source were several friends reporting they read that it was a hoax. I think there's a good chance it is a hoax (again) as there is still no real official news. Quote

Correct; what I posted above (from DeJohnette's FB page) is no longer there. Very odd. If it is a hoax, I cannot imagine the motivation of the hoaxers. Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted September 6, 2020 Report Posted September 6, 2020 I see this stating it’s a hoax. https://en.mediamass.net/people/gary-peacock/deathhoax.html Quote
BFrank Posted September 6, 2020 Report Posted September 6, 2020 Here's a FB post from 6 hours ago by Annette: "Now it appears the reports on Gary's death are a hoax, which indeed would be good news!" Quote

The article you linked is published by Mediamass, a parody news site. The second clue? The author of the piece is Jessica Simpson?!? Quote

That may well be, but in either case let's celebrate all the great music he's been involved in thru the years...and I've started a thread to do just that: Edited September 6, 2020 by danasgoodstuff Quote

Shrdlu Posted September 6, 2020 Report Posted September 6, 2020 That hoax is in very bad taste. I have never heard of anything like it, and I don't know what anyone could gain from it. Quote
J.A.W. Posted September 6, 2020 Report Posted September 6, 2020 So, anyone know what exactly the situation is? Quote
