mjzee
Recommendations? They have a lot of Peter Leitch, for example, who's a good guitarist. The Flanagan/Monterose looks interesting. Pepper Adams is usually reliable. Steve Kuhn? Nick Brignola can burn, but there are 10 titles. I have the Barry Harris - Live From NY. JSngry
The Bertha Hope is satisfying. And the Flanagan/Monterose is too.
HutchFan
mjzee, re: Steve Kuhn -- The Best Things is excellent. ... I'm not familiar with the others. Also, Pete Malinverni's Invisible Cities is very good -- with Rich Perry & Tim Hagans.
T.D.
I think the Brignola On a Different Level (with Kenny Barron, Dave Holland, Jack DeJohnette) is outstanding and on a different level from his other listed titles. JSngry
Let me answer in a different way about the Bertha hope record - if you don't yet know here, enter someplace else. But if you do know her already, go ahead and get this one. More, uh, "mellow" to use the euphemism often used to indicate that inevitable passages of time that don't dull the core of a voice. But BerthaHhope is (IS!) a treasure, not to be forgotten or overlooked. so proceed accordingly!
kh1958
I have the three Steve Kuhn recordings and the Bertha Hope and like them all.
Larry Kart
If you like Nick Brignola, I can endorse "On A Different Level" (DeJohnnete is on fire there) "Flight of the Eagle," "It's Time," "Seems Like Old Times," and "Raincheck." The others from Nick on the list I haven't heard. I should add that"It's Time" has some non-bari, multi-track pieces, which I think come across just fine, but some might bridle at the idea; in any case, Nick plays very well on all his horns. Also, for John Hicks fans, he's in excellent form on "Seems Like Old Times." He and Nick are a good pairing, as are Nick and Claudio Roditi. cliffpeterson
Thread from 2011 about Brignola music on Reservoir: I have all of the Brignola discs and think all of them are at least good. "THINGS AIN'T WHAT THEY USED TO BE / LAST SET AT SWEET BASIL" was released after his death. Reputedly he did not want that music released but the label went ahead anyway. I echo the comment about about the Kuhn dates and feel the same way about the Hod O'brien recordings. John Fedcock's big band music is also worthy. cliffpeterson
For whatever reason, Brignola's "Poinciana" (#151), also recorded for Reservoir, is not on this list.

Tom 1960
I'm a good friend of Mark Feldman and he'll be glad people are still interested in the label. Sales aren't what they used to be obviously. I own a good chunk of the Reservoir catalog. The Fedchocks are some of my favs from the label with Nick Brignola close behind. The Rob Schneiderman dates with Brian Lynch are quite good. Like the Valery Ponomorev dates. The Steve Kuhn's are very good along with the Kenny Barron session. Don't sleep on the Ralph Moore session either. Did I say I like this label? PS Going to get the Bertha Hope release next time I'm in Kingston.
