bebopbob Posted August 24, 2020 Report Posted August 24, 2020 (edited) Just heard Charli Persip has passed. Very saddened by the news - R.I.P. Charli Persip Edited August 24, 2020 by bebopbob Quote
JSngry Posted August 24, 2020 Report Posted August 24, 2020 That guy played a lot of music for a long time., and always with spunk and spirit. RIP, you left it better than you found it. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted August 24, 2020 Report Posted August 24, 2020 Sad news! RIP to one of the greats. Quote
J.A.W. Posted August 24, 2020 Report Posted August 24, 2020 (edited) Sad news. Mr Persip was 91. Edited August 24, 2020 by J.A.W. Quote
colinmce Posted August 24, 2020 Report Posted August 24, 2020 His playing on The Quest in particular was mind-altering for me early in my jazz listening. To this day one of the great jazz performances ever. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted August 24, 2020 Report Posted August 24, 2020 YEP. Still shocks me that some people can't get with that record; it's a classic in every sense of the word. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted August 24, 2020 Report Posted August 24, 2020 I think I was first aware of him in the Gillespie discs with Rollins and Stitt. I believe I later nominated "the Quest" in a long lost Organissimo thread called "Album of the Week". or some such. Quote
BillF Posted August 24, 2020 Report Posted August 24, 2020 (edited) Very sad. He was a big buddy of Lee Morgan's in their early days. A great deal was said about him in this which I read recently: Edited August 24, 2020 by BillF Quote
Peter Friedman Posted August 24, 2020 Report Posted August 24, 2020 Sorry to hear this bad news. I always liked his playing. I recall that quite a few years ago he became Charli instead of Charlie. Quote
Larry Kart Posted August 24, 2020 Report Posted August 24, 2020 Fine drummer, GREAT big band drummer. He's particularly inspired on the Bill Potts "Porgy and Bess" album. I believe I was told that he was a bit late for the date and sight read his way through things all the way. Maybe that's just what a pro should be able to do, but to do that at such a high level of inspiration! There lot of "hits" written into in those arrangements, and Persip nails them in an utterly free manner, as though he were making it all up. Also, he had a big beat, if you know what I mean. Quote
Joe Posted August 24, 2020 Report Posted August 24, 2020 Always crisp, that Charli Persip. He's a big part of the perfection that is Mal Waldron's THE QUEST, IMO. He also meshes exceedingly well with Jerome Richardson on his Prestige/New Jazz dates. And that record he made with his Jazz Statesmen for Bethlehem is quite enjoyable as well. Quote

sgcim Posted August 24, 2020 Report Posted August 24, 2020 Very sad to hear. Loved his playing on The Quest, but I haven't heard it for many years, since I loaned it to my cousin, and he liked it so much, he didn't want to return the vinyl! RIP, Mr. Persip... Quote
mikeweil Posted August 24, 2020 Report Posted August 24, 2020 (edited) R.I.P. One of the greatest bop / hard bop drummers that had it all down and was always somewhat underrated, but he was just as good as Philly Joe and all the others. Edited August 24, 2020 by mikeweil Quote
Justin V Posted August 24, 2020 Report Posted August 24, 2020 I was surprised to see that I had so many albums with him on drums. What a career! Thank you for the music, Mr. Persip, and rest in peace. Quote
sonnymax Posted August 25, 2020 Report Posted August 25, 2020 Thank you, Mr. Persip. Two of my favorites: Quote
Milestones Posted August 25, 2020 Report Posted August 25, 2020 Like Jimmy Cobb (probably more so), Persip was rather under-rated. I'm with those who regard The Quest as a great album. He's also the drummer on the first great Randy Weston record: Litlte Niles. R.I.P. Charlie/Charli Quote
