mjazzg Posted May 1, 2020 Report Posted May 1, 2020 Damn, this one hurts. What a legacy. Thank you Mr. Allen 8 minutes ago, soulpope said: Tony Allen (1940 - 2020) R.I.P .... Great photo Soulpope, it says so much "Such was the hole that Allen left in his band, Kuti needed four drummers to replace him." Guardian Quote
sidewinder Posted May 1, 2020 Report Posted May 1, 2020 I never heard much of his work but this seems particularly sad considering his more recent acclaim and higher critical profile. RIP. Quote
JSngry Posted May 1, 2020 Report Posted May 1, 2020 One of the formative voices of so much of the world's music. RIP, iconic. Quote
Dave James Posted May 1, 2020 Report Posted May 1, 2020 Tony Allen was the little engine that could. If you've never spent any time with the work of Fela Kuti, you've missed out on some of the most exciting and energizing playing to be found anywhere. Allen's relentless drumming was a huge part of the afro-beat sound. Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted May 2, 2020 Report Posted May 2, 2020 From Blue Note's Facebook feed, I've learned that Allen put out a 4 track EP for them in 2017. I never heard of it until now. It's pretty good too. Only available via download or an out of print LP. Quote
mjazzg Posted May 2, 2020 Report Posted May 2, 2020 This too, on Blue Note France and the Blakey tribute that Bresna references. A 10" Quote
kh1958 Posted May 2, 2020 Report Posted May 2, 2020 The Source is a good one; wish I hadn't missed the Art Blakey tribute. Quote
JSngry Posted May 2, 2020 Report Posted May 2, 2020 I know this ain't too much a Jimi Tenor crowd up in here, but...this DID happen, and I think it's dandy! Quote
