GA Russell Posted April 25, 2020 Report Posted April 25, 2020 I enjoy opening up a surf guitar album every May. The Ace label has some. They do good work, don't they? Quote
Dave James Posted April 25, 2020 Report Posted April 25, 2020 Here's one of the more bizarre examples or surf music colliding headlong with mainstream America in the early 60's. Quote

Yes, very good work and totally legit, licensed, etc. 36 minutes ago, Dave James said: Here's one of the more bizarre examples or surf music colliding headlong with mainstream America in the early 60's. Look Ma, no amplifiers or power cords! This, on the other hand, is real and freakin' fantastic. And this is pretty great. Edited April 25, 2020 by felser Quote
Matthew Posted April 25, 2020 Report Posted April 25, 2020 This is a nice series to pick up. Long live SURF MUSIC! Quote
Dave James Posted April 25, 2020 Report Posted April 25, 2020 Can I safely assume that the Bobby Fuller of "El Paso Rock" is the same Bobby Fuller who had a hit with this song? Quote

BFrank Posted April 25, 2020 Report Posted April 25, 2020 Rosie Flores from Austin and not known for her surf music, nails it here. Quote
felser Posted April 25, 2020 Report Posted April 25, 2020 Never understood how Bobby Fuller's "Let Her Dance" didn't become a huge hit song. Quote

Sundazed is another good label, isn't it? John, thanks for the affirmation of Ace. For whatever reason, I have always linked them in my mind with Charly. Quote

Sundazed is fabulous, sort of a better Rhino, founded by Bob Irwin. Great remastering on Sundazed. And their old catalogs were wonderful reading, very humorous. Quote
BFrank Posted April 26, 2020 Report Posted April 26, 2020 This Rhino box was pretty good, although I haven't listened to it in a long time. Quote
Marzz Posted April 26, 2020 Report Posted April 26, 2020 (edited) Second felser's comments about Ace Records! I have their 3 volume "Birth of Surf" compilations. The well known tracks are there (mostly on Vol.1) along with the obligatory (for Ace) rare/first time on CD recordings on the other volumes. I prefer Vol.1. The booklets are decent with some brief notes about each track/artist. Vol.1, https://www.amazon.com/Birth-Surf-Various-Artists/dp/B000PATZQ0 and the others (scroll down) https://acerecords.co.uk/various-artists-birth-of-surf Edited April 26, 2020 by Marzz Quote
GA Russell Posted April 27, 2020 Author Report Posted April 27, 2020 FWIW, I have four favorite surf guitar albums. Matthew Posted April 27, 2020 Report Posted April 27, 2020 (edited) Half because I love the song, the other half for the memories it conjures of growing up in San Diego where Endless Summer was a mainstay in the theaters. Dig this one because it's a badass song Edited April 27, 2020 by Matthew Quote
GA Russell Posted April 27, 2020 Author Report Posted April 27, 2020 OK, Matthew! I will see your Endless Summer, and raise with this. Quote

Dave James Posted May 1, 2020 Report Posted May 1, 2020 I'm shocked...shocked I say that we've gotten this far into a discussion of surf guitar with no mention Takeshi Terauchi & The Bunnys. Quote

Tomorrow being Memorial Day, I might open up the Surfaris cd. I forgot to mention that I also picked up a copy of Brian Wilson's No Pier Pressure. Quote
