mjazzg Posted April 21, 2020 Report Posted April 21, 2020 Gearbox Records tweeted today that they will be releasing a new Tolliver recording this summer entitled 'Connect'. No further details as yet. They usually do a good job so I'm looking forward to knowing more Watch this space, I guess Quote
felser Posted April 21, 2020 Report Posted April 21, 2020 Count me in if there is a CD release. Quote
Pim Posted April 21, 2020 Report Posted April 21, 2020 Wow that is great! I doubt the other Strata East will ever be released.... Quote

They do, often as not, release on CD as well as LP especially if it's a release of new music rather than their historical releases so you might be lucky John. Fingers crossed. david weiss Posted April 21, 2020 Report Posted April 21, 2020 I believe Lenny White and Buster Williams are on it among others. Recorded in the UK while on tour there last Fall. Quote
sidewinder Posted April 21, 2020 Report Posted April 21, 2020 I guess that must have been when he did the Jazz Cafe gig in Camden Town. Quote

Last time I was at Jazz Cafe was to see Lou Donaldson with Dr Lonnie Smith. Stevie Winwood was stood next to me, digging Lonnie ! Quote
mjazzg Posted April 22, 2020 Author Report Posted April 22, 2020 A little more info here, including confirmation of the line up. Nice to seesome Brit representation https://www.backseatmafia.com/news-charles-tolliver-announces-gearbox-records-deal-and-new-album/ Quote
bebopbob Posted April 24, 2020 Report Posted April 24, 2020 Thanks for some good news in these otherwise unhappy times- still can’t believe it took all this time to get Paper Man on CD but always happy with more Charles Tolliver on the way . Quote

LWayne Posted July 30, 2020 Report Posted July 30, 2020 Looking forward for this to drop on this Friday. No legal snafus like Monk's "Palo Allto", so hopefully not delayed... LWayne Quote
Pim Posted July 30, 2020 Report Posted July 30, 2020 Yeah me too! Also, ‘The Trenches’ popped up again on Dusty Groove.... for the third time. But the release of ‘Connect’ will probably go as planned Quote
sidewinder Posted August 1, 2020 Report Posted August 1, 2020 (edited) ‘Connect’ is definitely a winner. Tolliver plays with conviction and style and his compositions are soulful and first rate, Williams is his usual rock solid groove on bass, Lenny White full of fire and pianist Keith Brown, for me probably the unexpected standout. Jesse Davis excellent too. A real ace card by adding ‘local’ Binker Golding on two tracks - fits in brilliantly and plays with passion, really digging in. A winner all round. (Sorry if all that sounds a bit ‘Dusty Groove’ but it is good !) Edited August 1, 2020 by sidewinder Quote
Pim Posted August 1, 2020 Report Posted August 1, 2020 Thanks a lot for that little review Sidewinder. I am definitely going to buy it now! Quote

(Sorry if all that sounds a bit ‘Dusty Groove’ but it is good !) Agree with this review. Tolliver is solid throughout and I really enjoy the version of "Emperor March". Saw this group play in An Die Musik in Baltimore at the end of February and this new CD is very evocative of that set. Highly recommended! LWayne Quote
Eric Posted August 2, 2020 Report Posted August 2, 2020 Bought a copy at amazon and am listening on their platform before the CD arrives. It is also on Spotify and Apple Music. WINNER, WINNER, CHICKEN DINNER!! Quote
Pim Posted August 2, 2020 Report Posted August 2, 2020 Picked up my copy today in a record store today. Will give it a spin coming Tuesday! Contrary to others on the board I am a vinyl lover but 30 euros is just ridiculous so it’s the cd version for me. Quote
sidewinder Posted August 2, 2020 Report Posted August 2, 2020 They absolutely nail ‘Emperor March’ on this one. A classic. Quote
mjazzg Posted August 2, 2020 Author Report Posted August 2, 2020 After three listens I'm still to be convinced by this, obviously a minority view around here. I agree that 'Emperor March' is the strongest track but find the others a bit undercooked and I wanted more Tolliver, wish it was a piano less quartet. I'm hoping it will reveal its delights in due course. I'll just go and hide in the corner now... Quote
sidewinder Posted August 2, 2020 Report Posted August 2, 2020 I’m only sad that they won’t be touring this stuff as planned, this Summer. Quote
