Here's a session I often overlook. Not sure why I forget about it. Excellent stuff, and of historic significance, too.

An alternate of "Yesterdays" was issued on 78 and never reissued. I have a copy.

It's a later reissue on NEW JAZZ purple label, with a session of Teddy Charles and Jimmy Raney on side B.

No alternate Yesterdays on Prestige set.

My picks from Lee’s career might be...

Early- anything with Tristano and Warne

late early career - meeting with Warne Marsh ( Atlantic)

mid career- Motion (Verve) with Elvin

late career- Dig-it (Steeplechase) with the incredibly fabulous Ted Brown.

The story mentions he found the 78 at the Jazz Record Mart about 35 years ago. I got my copy (and a bunch of original Prestige pressings) when I worked there in '66/67. When the local Prestige distributor phased out his 78 inventory, Bob bought the lot.

The Discogs entry (* New Jazz 855   Lee Konitz - Duet For Saxophone And Guitar / Yesterdays / * Prestige 755   Lee Konitz - Duet For Saxophone And Guitar / Yesterdays) is incorrect. These recordings have nothing to do with the "Duet" session.

I think that this was my first Konitz-led session and is still one of my favorites.  Because of this album, I once called out for 'Skylark' at a Konitz concert when he asked for requests.  It didn't work, but I tried. :)

In the George Russell biography, there's a wild story about the session that produced Russell's "Ezz-Thetic. Miles was strung out during the session, and trying to get out of the studio to score, but Russell and his wife insisted that he play the line on Ezz-Thetic with Lee, but Miles couldn't cut it. It's a difficult line that doesn't sit well on the horn, but Lee had no trouble with it.

Miles kept messing it up, and got so desperate, that he bolted for the door, but Russell's wife (who was also married to Giuffre at one time) was guarding the door, and blocked him from leaving. She and Russell dragged him back to the session, and Russell came up with that great counter line Miles could cut, and it came out fine, as you can hear on the record. The blowing changes are just "Love For Sale" so Lee plays the  schlitz out of it.

It is a missed opportunity and lack of discographical knowledge that Fantasy never issued a complete Tristano/Konitz/Miles CD including the take that Chuck has. It all would nicely have fit onto one CD.

How much if this ground was covered by this?

I’m thinking none, but there is that additional duet at the end - not with Miles.
