chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted April 16, 2020 Report Posted April 16, 2020 FYI, this is beyond anything I have ever experienced. This is not just another legend passing in the Chewy household. Far far far from that, far from that Quote

Gheorghe Posted April 16, 2020 Report Posted April 16, 2020 Such a Wonderful musician ! The Incredible Thing is that just YESTERDAY I was thinking very much About him, I remembered that I saw him on a TV documentary About bop and cool in 1978 and liked very much what he played and what he said in that documentary. My first listening experience was that Incredible solo of "Cherokee" on the Steeplechase Album "Lone-Lee". Quote

BillF Posted April 16, 2020 Report Posted April 16, 2020 (edited) Sad news. Saw him once - at the Peel Hotel, Leeds in about 1968 with a local rhythm section. Edited April 16, 2020 by BillF Quote
romualdo Posted April 16, 2020 Report Posted April 16, 2020 RIP Lee - will miss you & your magic alto but your music will live on I was lucky enough to see Lee perform in September of 2017 at Kitano's (NYC) see pic - had a fantastic up front table Also saw him in the audience scatting along to the Barry Harris Trio at the Village Vanguard a few nights later Magic times in NYC Quote
Clunky Posted April 16, 2020 Report Posted April 16, 2020 (edited) Sad loss but what a life. I was playing some Konitz yesterday and reflected on his longevity. Amazing career. I was lucky enough to see him play a number of times RIP Edited April 16, 2020 by Clunky Quote
sidewinder Posted April 16, 2020 Report Posted April 16, 2020 I think the last time I saw him was some years ago with Kenny Wheeler and John Abercrombie. RIP - amazing career and life. Quote
sambrasa Posted April 16, 2020 Report Posted April 16, 2020 Only time I witnessed Lee Konitz in concert he was playing in trio with Marc Johnson and Joey Baron. I feel privileged. R.I.P. Quote
mjazzg Posted April 16, 2020 Report Posted April 16, 2020 Saw him in the 90s with a local trio including Steve Arguelles. It was so good I went back the following night. Only done that once since (Lou Gare). I can't remember seeing the 'Angel Song' concert but equally can't imagine missing it. Enjoyed recordings from the full span of his tremendous career. Quote

Yes, I saw him with Wheeler in the ‘Angel Song’ tour and pretty sure I saw him as a guest with one of Kenny’s Birthday Big Bands, possibly his 75th. That may have been the occasion with Abercrombie. From my vaguish recollection, Kenny used himself, Norma Winstone and Konitz as lead voices. First time I saw him was at a long-gone Toronto Club with local rhythm section. Didn’t even know he was on until I passed their entrance with makeshift sign ‘Tonite - Lee Konitz’. I was in like a flash. Lou Gare - saw quite a number of times with Mike Westbrook. Kevin Bresnahan Posted April 16, 2020 Report Posted April 16, 2020 Somehow, I managed to catch Lee Konitz live many times. He was a master. RIP to a Jazz legend. Quote

skeith Posted April 16, 2020 Report Posted April 16, 2020 A true giant!! Thanks Lee for the music you gave us. Quote
John Tapscott Posted April 16, 2020 Report Posted April 16, 2020 Saw him once in Toronto with a local rhythm section. Just played one of his excellent Nonet records last week. I generally preferred his earlier music to some of his later things. But a real giant of the music, for sure. R.I.P. Lee Konitz. Quote
mikeweil Posted April 16, 2020 Report Posted April 16, 2020 R.I.P. He seemed to be around forever. Well, his music will be. Quote
Milestones Posted April 16, 2020 Report Posted April 16, 2020 (edited) Listening to Sound of Surprise, with John Abercrombie (also passed) on most tracks. One of my favorite Lee Konitz records. Edited April 16, 2020 by Milestones Quote
