soulpope Posted April 11, 2020 Report Posted April 11, 2020 The sadness keeps lingering on .... : Jymie Merritt (1926 - 2020) R.I.P .... Quote
BillF Posted April 11, 2020 Report Posted April 11, 2020 (edited) Sad news. Saw him with the Jazz Messengers in 1961. Venue? The Free Trade Hall, of course. Shorter now the only survivor of that band. Edited April 11, 2020 by BillF Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted April 11, 2020 Report Posted April 11, 2020 RIP Mr. Merritt. Thanks for carrying the music. Quote
felser Posted April 11, 2020 Report Posted April 11, 2020 The bassist on the first jazz album I ever bought, Lee Morgan's "Live at the Lighthouse". RIP. Quote
J.A.W. Posted April 11, 2020 Report Posted April 11, 2020 Another one of the "old guard" gone... Sad news. Quote
JSngry Posted April 12, 2020 Report Posted April 12, 2020 Seemed like he was going to be around forever... RIP Quote
Brad Posted April 12, 2020 Report Posted April 12, 2020 RIP. Part of one of the greatest lineups ever (IMHO, of course). Quote
J.A.W. Posted April 12, 2020 Report Posted April 12, 2020 Just now, Brad said: RIP. Part of one of the greatest lineups ever (IMHO, of course). Agreed. Quote

brownie Posted April 12, 2020 Report Posted April 12, 2020 Very sad news... Saw him with Art Blakey's Messengers (Morgan, Golson, Timmons) when they appeared at the Paris Club Saint-Germain back in 1958. Great player, very nice and discreet man. Quote
jazzcorner Posted April 12, 2020 Report Posted April 12, 2020 Will play this one today "in memoriam" for many years good music from the group. Quote
sidewinder Posted April 12, 2020 Report Posted April 12, 2020 (edited) Sad news but a good, long life. It is good that he was interviewed on that Lee Morgan documentary and to good effect too. My favourite music from him has to be Lee’s ‘Live at the Lighthouse’. Only Bennie Maupin left from that band now. RIP. Edited April 12, 2020 by sidewinder Quote

Gheorghe Posted April 13, 2020 Report Posted April 13, 2020 Very sad news. I also know him mostly from the Art Blakey records and the Max Roach records. Did he also play in his last years ? Quote
mikeweil Posted April 13, 2020 Report Posted April 13, 2020 R.I.P. Like so many hard bop players he started in R & B bands, Chris Powell, that is. Blakey - Roach - Morgan are the three big landmarks in his career. Not that many sideman dates, and, surprisingly, only one piano trio (Sonny Clark). Lord doesn't list a single session after Morgan's death - what a shame. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted April 13, 2020 Report Posted April 13, 2020 Sad news, but a life really lived! RIP. Quote
