Chuck Nessa Posted April 3, 2020 Report Posted April 3, 2020 Another recent find. In the Fall of 1962 (I think) I went to Des Moines to see Shelly Manne & his Men in concert. Afterwards I got a couple of autographs and spoke with Conte Candoli to tell him I really liked his Crown lp and mentioned it had been stolen from my dorm room. He said the label gave him a box of them to take on the tour and said I should come to their hotel and get a copy. I waited in the lobby for a while and then Conte and Russ Freeman came down and delivered the record and spent some time with me. As you can see my younger brother added his signature to my treasure. bertrand Posted April 3, 2020 Report Posted April 3, 2020 Was it standard practice for artists to sell LPs at gigs? The CD era definitely made that much easier, a lot less heavy. I wonder if you could buy Blue Notes directly from the artists at gigs. Quote

Daniel A Posted April 3, 2020 Report Posted April 3, 2020 At least Conte didn't bring them to the gig - he kept the box at the hotel. But then, why bring it along on the tour? Quote

Or maybe as a medium of exchange to assist in procuring, uh…"creature comforts"... I do like how Shelley Manne says "Hi", he doesn't just sign his name, he also greets you. Hi! Quote
Dmitry Posted April 3, 2020 Report Posted April 3, 2020 You've got some type-written text bleeding through from the other side, Chuck. I hope it's nothing important. Quote
Peter Friedman Posted April 3, 2020 Report Posted April 3, 2020 I recall buying that Crown LP when first issued. Always liked it. Was glad when I was able, a few years back, to find a CD copy. Quote

Dmitry Posted April 5, 2020 Report Posted April 5, 2020 Regarding albums being sold at gigs - look at the bottom of the image. In this case - not sold, but raffled. Wasn't an easy walk home for the winner. Quote

gmonahan Posted April 5, 2020 Report Posted April 5, 2020 The LP in question was "Little Band Big Jazz," correct? Cool story Chuck! gregmo Quote
