soulpope Posted March 31, 2020 Report Posted March 31, 2020 Sad news via Terence Blanchard`s Facebook site : Wallace Rooney (1960 - 2020) .... COVID-19 victim .... R.I.P ..... Quote
JSngry Posted March 31, 2020 Report Posted March 31, 2020 Rooney or Roney? Either way, that sucks. Quote
Dmitry Posted March 31, 2020 Report Posted March 31, 2020 (edited) My god.... i saw him at the revived Cafe Bohemia in NYC on January 11. It was a fantastic gig! He was a very heavy-set man and could do not get up and about without difficulty, but he played superbly. Immediately after the concert I bought his new album that just came out last year. Blue Dawn- Blue Nights is really good, refreshing, inventive post-bop, infinitely better than the cookie-cutter, uninspiring music the conservatory graduates are churning out on industrial scale these days. AND I was slated to hear him at Briwn University on March 14. That concert was canceled due to quarantine at the last moment. Oh man.. Edited April 1, 2020 by Dmitry Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted March 31, 2020 Report Posted March 31, 2020 This is such terrible news. I can't imagine what his 3 children are going through, especially after losing their mother, Geri Allen, just a few years ago. Quote
CJ Shearn Posted March 31, 2020 Report Posted March 31, 2020 Damn..... I interviewed him twice last year and saw and talked to him at the Birth of the Cool premiere Quote
J.A.W. Posted March 31, 2020 Report Posted March 31, 2020 (edited) Very sad indeed and way too young, he would have turned 60 next month. Edited March 31, 2020 by J.A.W. Quote
sidewinder Posted March 31, 2020 Report Posted March 31, 2020 (edited) Words fail me, tragic news. From what I saw of him at close quarters, he was a very nice guy. May he RIP. Last time I saw him was in Herbie H’s band, best part of 20 years ago now. Edited March 31, 2020 by sidewinder Quote
Justin V Posted March 31, 2020 Report Posted March 31, 2020 (edited) I saw him four times, three times as a bandleader and once as part of a star-studded Brubeck tribute (I seem to recall that he played an unabashedly pretty version of 'In Your Own Sweet Way'). Although his bands could suffer from his use of inexperienced musicians, he took obvious pride in serving as a mentor. The last time I saw him was in June when he played a fiery miniature set as part of a Coltrane tribute. His band was better than I'd seen him with before. I'll remember how encouraging he was to his young bandmates that night. Thank you for the music, Mr. Roney, and rest in peace. Edited April 1, 2020 by Justin V Quote
gmonahan Posted March 31, 2020 Report Posted March 31, 2020 This is dreadful. What a wonderful talent he was! Tragically, I doubt he will be the last great musician we lose to this scourge. gregmo Quote

I'm not 100% sure I did see Roney, though it is likely I did at the Jazz Showcase or at the Chicago Jazz Fest. Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted March 31, 2020 Report Posted March 31, 2020 Gosh, another loss. RIP Wallace. Thanks for the music. Quote

HutchFan Posted March 31, 2020 Report Posted March 31, 2020 More horrible news. Ugh. I had the opportunity to meet and spend some time with Wallace Roney many years ago, when he was young man playing with Tony Williams' band. He was a very friendly and obviously a huge talent. I'm so sorry to hear that he's gone. ... And he wasn't even 60 years old! Quote
sidewinder Posted March 31, 2020 Report Posted March 31, 2020 First time I saw him was with Tony Williams too. Quote

Kevin Bresnahan Posted March 31, 2020 Report Posted March 31, 2020 I was lucky to catch Wallace many times over the years. One of those times, he had his brother Antoine and his (then) wife Geri Allen in the band. That was an incredible show. Quote
sgcim Posted March 31, 2020 Report Posted March 31, 2020 Terrible news, great trumpet player. RIP. Quote
relyles Posted March 31, 2020 Report Posted March 31, 2020 Very sad news. Although I heard him live that I can remember once with Tony Williams and once with Al Foster, I regret even more now missing him a couple of times recently when he appeared with his own band in my area. Never take for granted that there will be another opportunity. My prayers go out to his family. Quote
ghost of miles Posted March 31, 2020 Report Posted March 31, 2020 Holy shit. I just saw him at the newly-reopened Cafe Bohemia in New York two months ago. Goddam. Quote
medjuck Posted March 31, 2020 Report Posted March 31, 2020 (edited) I saw him a few years ago with Geri Allen on piano. They were great. Edited March 31, 2020 by medjuck Quote
mikeweil Posted March 31, 2020 Report Posted March 31, 2020 Very sad news. Always liked his playing, saw him live with Herbie Hancock and his own quintet with his brother. I'm sure Antoine will look after the children. What a nasty virus! R.I.P. Quote
