.:.impossible Posted June 29, 2003 Report Posted June 29, 2003 My wife and I have really been enjoying this disc! I'm glad I finally bought it. The more I listen to it, the more I hear. Thanks for getting this out guys! When are you coming to Providence?! Quote
Sundog Posted June 30, 2003 Report Posted June 30, 2003 (edited) Just received my copy Saturday afternoon. I was on the road all day today. It's a good thing I grabbed "WFTBS" on my way out the door, because here in Chicagoland it's construction season. One of only two seasons that Chicago experiences, the other being winter. B) But I digress, I've heard the album 3 plus times today, and I have to say that you guys are one tight unit. Lot's of head bobbing, foot tapping, and dashboard drumming taking place during my travels today. Great interplay between all parties. Wonderful to hear the way that Jim and Joe can lock up on a moments notice, or play in a complimentary manner just as easily. Funky drum beats galore from Randy! And last but certainly not least, a fine batch of original songs. So when are ya'll coming to Chicago? Your choice, pick a season! Super-Cool and Groovy! Edited June 30, 2003 by Sundog Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted June 30, 2003 Author Report Posted June 30, 2003 Aw, you guys are making me blush!! I'm currently working on clubs in Chicago. We'd really love to play the Green Mill. Any other suggestions? As for Providence, I assume you mean Rhode Island? Again, any suggestions? We're in the midst of planning an East Coast tour... Quote
.:.impossible Posted June 30, 2003 Report Posted June 30, 2003 You could play at AS220 or Chan's. Either way, I'd be happy to make some flyers up and hang 'em all over town! www.as220.org http://www.chanseggrollsandjazz.com/ Quote
jacknife Posted July 21, 2003 Report Posted July 21, 2003 Man, this cd kicks! I think my favorite tune so far is #2 Jimmy Smith Goes to Washington. Anytime you guys want to come to Madison, WI to play, I'll be there! Heres to looking foward to your next cd!!! Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted July 21, 2003 Author Report Posted July 21, 2003 Thank you, jacknife! Any venues you'd suggest in Madison? Quote
mikeweil Posted July 22, 2003 Report Posted July 22, 2003 (edited) Buy it! If I were to review it in downbeat, i'd give it four stars: ****, meaning "very good", and I'm very (!) critical .... The only thing I think that could have been "better", or different: I would have programmed it differently (I dig odd time signatures, love to play them, but would have opened the CD with a straight tune), and, playing some drums myself, I prefer a more colorful snare and fuller bass drum sound, it's a little dry for my taste. But this is all I have to critize. I store my new CDs in a tower beneath the system and listen to them for a while before I file them away, and the Boogaloo Sisters stayed there for weeks!! I mean, buy it, order a second copy for a friend, it's one of the best organ combo CDs I've heard in a while, with a lot of styles from funk to straightahead to pensive to experimental, has a great guest soloist, and excellent core members, it hits right in the middle between SOULIVE and the Larry GoldingsTrio, covers a lot of ground, please reserve me a copy of the follow-up .... Joe G Posted July 22, 2003 Report Posted July 22, 2003 Thank you so much for those encouraging words Mike. That was a great post to get my day started in proper fashion. BTW, I was the one who pushed for Meet Me @ 11 to start the album. Jim and Randy were thinking of Young's Dream. I realize that having an odd meter tune to start might be confusing to some, but there are other qualities that tune has which I felt made it a good opener. It's upbeat, catchy, fairly unique and original, and perhaps most importantly, concise. Of course, all that might make it a good closer too. Programming is probably less important these days, because it's so easy to skip around on a cd. Good ears on the drum sound; our engineer was just talking about that the last time Jim saw him... there's things I want to do differently with the guitar next time too. But overall we are happy with the sound. Thanks again for the kind words. Quote
