kh1958 Posted April 8, 2021 Author Report Posted April 8, 2021 His set in the Blues Tent at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival in 2019 (two years ago!) was incredible. THIS WEEKEND: GEORGE CABLES TRIO "Cables established himself among the jazz cognoscenti by way of his work with Dexter Gordon, Sonny Rollins, and Bobby Hutcherson, among others. But he’s also put together his own fine albums for decades, establishing himself as an individualist whose comfort with bebop-based modern jazz has an unimpeachable stamp of authenticity." - The New Yorker The George Cables Trio will be available for a limited re-stream period, starting Friday at 8 PM EDT. The show, originally broadcast in September 2020, features Mr. Beautiful himself on piano, Essiet Okon Essiet on bass, and Billy Hart on drums. Tickets are $10; available on our website. Quote
kh1958 Posted April 8, 2021 Author Report Posted April 8, 2021 FRIDAY APRIL 9 - SATURDAY APRIL 10 / LIVE STREAMED / 8PM EST Buy Streaming Pass Christian Sands (piano) Yasushi Nakamura (bass) Clarence Penn (drums) “In addition to being a technically adroit, harmonically sophisticated player, Sands is one of the most profoundly rhythmic young pianists in jazz today.” – Downbeat The incredible talent Christian Sands leads his trio with bassist Yasushi Nakamura and drummer Clarence Penn in two nights of livestream concerts. Sands’ piano promise was recognized from a young age and his teachers have included Dr. Billy Taylor, Dave Brubeck, Jason Moran, and Vijay Iyer. He gained wide acclaim after Christian McBride added him to his group Inside Straight where he stayed for six years. The New York Times says, “Sands is already known as one of the most commanding pianists of jazz’s young generation, a gospel-infused technician with contemporary sensibilities and a deeply rhythmic approach.” Downbeat calls him, “an imaginative composer, a clever arranger and a skillful technician with a fluid style.” And, as for this trio WBGO extolls “the effortless hookup Sands has with bassist Yasushi Nakamura and drummer Clarence Penn.” SMOKE SCREENS PRESENTS: THE CHRISTIAN SANDS TRIO Quote

I recorded the Eubie Blake 1977 set (recorded aboard the Riverboat SS President) when Jazz Alive! aired it circa 1978, though it is also a part of Concert Vault's offerings.I'll try to tune in to some of their webcasts, though their scheduling is awful for some of the ones I want to hear. kh1958 Posted April 21, 2021 Author Report Posted April 21, 2021 I remember reading, I think in Downbeat, that Mingus was appearing at the Festival in 1977; I sure wanted to go to hear MIngus but in college lacked the means/cash to get there. I wish I had tried harder. Quote
