Onxidlib Posted March 18, 2020 Report Posted March 18, 2020 End of May will see the first (complete) release of Athanor's Nickesldorf recording from 1978. One short track was available previously on a compilation with recordings from the Nickelsdorf Konfrontationen Festival. Limited on CD (120 copies) and as double vinyl (400 copies). Musicians are Harun Ghulam Barabbas (as), Muhammad Malli (dr,perc), Joseph Traindl (tb) and Richard Ahmad Pechoc (p). The label is Black Monk which already edited reissues of two early Franz Koglmann releases. One more recording - a duo between Harun Ghulam Barabbas and Alaeddin Adlernest (bassoon) is also scheduled. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted March 18, 2020 Report Posted March 18, 2020 Will grip! This is right up my alley. Quote
mjazzg Posted March 18, 2020 Report Posted March 18, 2020 None of the musicians mean anything to me. What are we likely to hear? Any clues? Quote

I could offer a short track from the above mentioned Nickelsdorf compilation in mp3. But I do not know wether this is OK here. If it's OK, I would add a link here, with Wetransfer. Quote
mjazzg Posted March 18, 2020 Report Posted March 18, 2020 Thanks. I don't know what the rules are. A PM with the link maybe? Or just your description, I'm intrigued. Quote

Would be pretty free stuff I'd think; Barabbas was in the Masters of Unorthodox Jazz as was Malli (who was also in the Reform Art Unit and Three Motions). Josef Traindl, another RAU member, played on one of the aforementioned Koglmann records with Steve Lacy a.o. as well. Quote
mjazzg Posted March 18, 2020 Report Posted March 18, 2020 Now having listened to the one track I am definitely in for this. Not overly free CT, this one track reminds me of NYAQ (with a pianist and no bass...) on very quick acquaintance. Want to hear more Quote
clifford_thornton Posted March 18, 2020 Report Posted March 18, 2020 Right on; yeah some RAU/Masters of Unorthodox Jazz stuff is more of a blowout than others. I don't have that Nickelsdorf CD but have heard it before. That's the one with Frank Wright, correct? Quote
Onxidlib Posted March 18, 2020 Author Report Posted March 18, 2020 Yep, it's the one with Frank Wright. Quote
mjazzg Posted March 18, 2020 Report Posted March 18, 2020 So now I'm looking at Masters Of Unorthodox Jazz 'Overground' from 2013 on Discogs Quote
clifford_thornton Posted March 18, 2020 Report Posted March 18, 2020 It's good. Never fingered an original (insanely rare) but I did buy the reissue. Quote

sidewinder Posted March 18, 2020 Report Posted March 18, 2020 ‘Athanor’ sounds like it might be a character in Lord of the Rings. or maybe this.. Quote

clifford_thornton Posted March 18, 2020 Report Posted March 18, 2020 Yeah, that I agree with! Malli is almost funky on this Nickelsdorf cut. It's too bad he's not more widely known; I enjoy his saxophone playing as well, especially on the duo LP with George Brown. Quote
Onxidlib Posted April 6, 2020 Author Report Posted April 6, 2020 The release will be postponed according the producer / label. It is now scheduled for September 2020. Two excerpts are posted now on Soundcloud. Quote
