jazzkrow Posted March 5, 2020 Report Posted March 5, 2020 Does anyone out there have any links to formal interviews with Johnny Hodges, whether on Downbeat or elsewhere? I would especially be interested in any links that would lead to a chance to hear Johnny Hodges voice. I've never had the chance to hear him speak. Thanks so much. Quote

gmonahan Posted March 7, 2020 Report Posted March 7, 2020 Speaking of Hodges, has anyone read Con Chapman's biography? Thoughts? gregmo Quote

I read it recently. I cannot say I really learned much from it. It goes over some periods very quickly, and there are some lengthy tangents which are not always directly related to Hodges. Ex: a chapter entitled "The Blues" contains a long exposé on W.C.Handy, and then a few pages on Hodge's collaboration with Wild Bill Davis. There are some interesting quotes from contemporaries, but I assume you could find most of them elsewhere. Here is an interview with the author: http://jerryjazzmusician.com/2020/01/interview-with-con-chapman-author-of-rabbits-blues-the-life-and-music-of-johnny-hodges/ Edited January 10, 2021 by hopkins Quote
gmonahan Posted January 10, 2021 Report Posted January 10, 2021 I went ahead and read it after I posted that query, and like you I wasn't all that impressed. I was especially surprised there was no discography. I think Hodges might just be one of those people whose music was *far* more interesting than his life story. gregmo Quote
Ken Dryden Posted January 11, 2021 Report Posted January 11, 2021 Thanks for sharing the links. I wonder what happened to the test pressings of unissued alternate takes after Hodges’ death? Quote
