mrjazzman Posted February 22, 2020 Report Posted February 22, 2020 Saw The Cookers for the 2nd or 3rd time at Yoshi's Oakland last night Thurs 2-20-2020, have all their cd's. As much as I like these guys, they're starting to look and sound a little tired, worn, weathered but still doing serious touring. Soon will be in the Netherlands. We all know what Kenny Rogers said, might be time for these guys to "fold em" Quote
Justin V Posted February 22, 2020 Report Posted February 22, 2020 I've seen the group 4 times, the most recent being last year, and they've lived up to their name every time. Heck, the last time I saw them, Billy Harper opened up with a twenty-minute solo and burned the place down. I'd gladly pay to see any of the members individually or together. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted February 22, 2020 Report Posted February 22, 2020 I think I’ve seen the group 3x since I moved to DC almost 9 years ago, and always pretty uniformly excellent each time. Billy in particular has always seemed as good as ever, along with one other time I also saw Billy (sans Cookers) here within the last year, and he played as well as any tenor player I’ve ever heard, two long sets. kh1958 Posted February 22, 2020 Report Posted February 22, 2020 I'm planning on seeing the Cookers for the second time on May 2. Billy Harper has never disappointed so far. Quote
T.D. Posted February 22, 2020 Report Posted February 22, 2020 Can only comment on Billy Harper...saw him live a couple of years ago. Couldn't believe that Billy was around 75 years old - he looked younger and in better shape than I did at 60 (and I stay in decent physical condition). Quote
BFrank Posted February 22, 2020 Report Posted February 22, 2020 Anybody can have an off night (if that's what it was). When in doubt ... just watch Billy Hart. He NEVER disappoints! Quote
Pim Posted February 22, 2020 Report Posted February 22, 2020 Will see them in Rotterdam coming March. Can’t wait to see these living legends playing together. Harper is among my very favorite artists, along with Mal and Coltrane. Quote
Gheorghe Posted February 22, 2020 Report Posted February 22, 2020 Billy Harper is fantastic. I´ll never forget the first time I saw him in 1978 with the Max Roach Quartet, and "Peaceful Heart", his great tune. Quote

I looked into a couple of Gearbox LPs and the shipping was around $20 per LP. Quote

sidewinder Posted July 21, 2021 Report Posted July 21, 2021 The Gearbox LP pressings are very good so I will be in for this. Usually not extortionate either (at least from here). They have been on form of late, with their recent 1963 Roland Kirk Ronnie Scott’s issue. Quote

They aren't hard to get in the US. Looking forward to hearing this. Quote
kh1958 Posted July 29, 2021 Report Posted July 29, 2021 (edited) You can pre-order the CD on amazon now. https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B097BZJVCX/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Edited July 29, 2021 by kh1958 Quote

When you buy from Amazon, they usually offer a digital download of the LP via their AutoRip feature. Quote

Kevin Bresnahan Posted August 3, 2021 Report Posted August 3, 2021 I pre-ordered the LP from Amazon. I'm looking forward to it. I do hope Amazon offers AutoRip on this so I don't have to buy the CD version later. Quote
Eric B Posted August 4, 2021 Report Posted August 4, 2021 Stoked for the Cookers LP. Gearbox seems like a great outfit. Loved the Mønk archival release they did a couple years back, and this Cookers session looks first-class all the way. Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted August 4, 2021 Report Posted August 4, 2021 Tuesday night. I also pre-ordered the new CD. Quote
