Clunky Posted January 1, 2020 Report Posted January 1, 2020 RIP I have always liked his contributions to the music Quote
Justin V Posted January 1, 2020 Report Posted January 1, 2020 I only have two of his leader dates, The Quartet and the Quintet and On My Own (a duo with Russ Tompkins), but his tone, warmth, phrasing and humor made an impression on me. When rumors of his death after a stroke circulated a few years ago, his response that he was only 'slightly dead' cracked me up. He then dealt with the stroke's after-effects by switching to playing trumpet left-handed. Thank you, Mr. Sheldon, and rest in peace. Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted January 3, 2020 Report Posted January 3, 2020 Like many in my age group, I was introduced to Jack via his gig with Merv Griffin. Now, Jack and Merv have been reunited, along with Zsa Zsa Gabor, Truman Capote, and Orson Welles. Quote
JSngry Posted January 3, 2020 Report Posted January 3, 2020 TTK - you have been delequent in pointing out the Sheldon/Sebesky albums.. Quote
ejp626 Posted January 3, 2020 Report Posted January 3, 2020 I was listening to a few of his recordings over the past few days, including The Warm World of Jack Sheldon (Dot). Unless I am just not looking in the right places, The Cool World of Jack Sheldon is not available for streaming and generally only as a pricey CD import. It's not that hard to find it on LP, though given shipping prices these days... Does anyone have a view on The Cool World? Is it worth tracking down? How does it compare to his other sessions? Thanks! Quote

sgcim Posted January 3, 2020 Report Posted January 3, 2020 Very sad to hear. Compared to Doc, he was a refreshing, subversive presence on the Tonight Show. When I heard the Miles album he made without knowing who it was, I thought, ",Hey, I've been wrong about Miles all these years...". RIP, Mr. Sheldon... Quote

I take it that these pre-date CTI - let alone that 80s album with the horrible cover where Sebesky looks like an annoyed golfer. Quote
JSngry Posted January 3, 2020 Report Posted January 3, 2020 1968 and 1969. I like Warm a lot better than Cool, but that's just me. Sebesky's fully formed here, and there is Rhodes. It's pretty much like Freddie Playing "Uncle Albert" only a few years earlier and with shorter tracks. And, of course, with Jack Sheldon instead of Freddie. Quote
sidewinder Posted January 11, 2020 Report Posted January 11, 2020 Marc Myers has posted links to the 2008 Jack Sheldon documentary film on his blog. Definitely worth checking out ! Quote
