I only have two of his leader dates, The Quartet and the Quintet and On My Own (a duo with Russ Tompkins), but his tone, warmth, phrasing and humor made an impression on me.  When rumors of his death after a stroke circulated a few years ago, his response that he was only 'slightly dead' cracked me up.  He then dealt with the stroke's after-effects by switching to playing trumpet left-handed.  Thank you, Mr. Sheldon, and rest in peace.

I was listening to a few of his recordings over the past few days, including The Warm World of Jack Sheldon (Dot).  Unless I am just not looking in the right places, The Cool World of Jack Sheldon is not available for streaming and generally only as a pricey CD import.  It's not that hard to find it on LP, though given shipping prices these days...

Does anyone have a view on The Cool World?  Is it worth tracking down?  How does it compare to his other sessions?  Thanks!

Very sad to hear. Compared to Doc, he was a refreshing, subversive presence on the Tonight Show.

When I heard the Miles album he made without knowing who it was, I thought, ",Hey, I've been wrong about Miles all these years...".

RIP, Mr. Sheldon...

1968 and 1969. I like Warm a lot better than Cool, but that's just me. Sebesky's fully formed here, and there is Rhodes.  It's pretty much like Freddie Playing "Uncle Albert" only a few years earlier and with shorter tracks. And, of course, with Jack Sheldon instead of Freddie.

So this is it for West Coast Jazz?  I mean I know Ernie Andrews is chillin but as far as the pacific jazz guys and such was Jack Sheldon the last remaining big dog- end of an era :( :( :(

Well,  Terry Gibbs and Plas Johnson are both still with us.
