I like beer. All kinds of beer.

I went through a period of liking/trying various American Microbrews. Then I drifted to the European imports and enjoyed the hell out of them. Pilsner Urquell is one of my favorites as a result. Also Guinness.

Recently, I've been investigating/sampling the cheap American mass-market beers. I'll admit to liking Pabst Blue Ribbon and Old Milwaukee. There is a certain something about the Old Milwaukee that seems good to me. I believe the Old Milwaukee to be a good beer, low-priced and mass-marketed or not.

If I want a top-quality beer, of course, I'd still be more interested in a European import versus a can of Old Milwaukee. When I'm in the mood for cheap and quantity, however, Old Milwaukee is my brew of choice.

Got opinions?

usually one american brewed beer indeed is too much already if that is what you mean moose. ;)

Yup. Particularly possibly the two worst beers known to man. You know, I'm not much of a beer snob. My favorite is Moosehead (surprise!) and my idea of a German brew is Beck's Dark, so I'm not exactly setting the world on fire with my discriminating tastes, but PBR? I'd rather drink toilet water...

Uh...wesbed, I should point out that I am grinning as I post in this thread, even if the smiley isn't visible!

I'm grinning as well... and enjoying the conversation. :P

I always find it interesting, when I admit to actually liking PBR and Old Milwaukee (which I do, when in the right mood), the reactions and opinions I get from other beer connoisseurs.

Yes, I know and appreciate a top-quality beer. At the same time, I believe the cheap American beers are equally as good as the higher-priced cheap American beers (such as Coors, Bud, and Miller).

I'd choose an Old Milwaukee over a Corona or Heineken, most any day.

I'll admit right away that I'm a beer snob (among other kinds of snobbery) but I genuinely enjoy Pabst. I think it's considerably better than the others in its price range as well as the big three (Bud, Miller, Coors).

That said, I wouldn't put it up against Staropramen, Paulaner, Urquell, Anchor, Guiness, Beamish, etc but I think it has its merits.

I never understood the Coors mystique. I grew up in Georgia, and someone brought a case back from "out west" way back when, and after all the anticipation, it was the wateriest beer I've ever had. I must admit, I can't disagree with you.

Coors and Heineken would get my split-vote for most overrated beers.

In the interest of full disclosure, I should point out that I can't drink beer (or any other alcoholic beverage) any more due to the medication I'm on. So I can't even have my beloved Moosehead... :(

I like Amstel.  And Michelob.  Call me Mr. Ol' Standby

Well,,, I like Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout, Sapporo Black, Bell's Cherry Stout, Paulener October fest, Dortmunder, or a good trappist ale like Corsendonk, or any of the Ayinger lagers and wheat beers. As far as domestic beer, I'll drink it if it's a micro beer. I have no taste for the massed produced beer flavored waters, whose cans, cartons, and bottles I too frequently find littering our roads and highways... Especially Bud Lite....

I think it was just that: the mystique of something unavailable in your part of the country (wherever you may be). I remember when I was living in Lawrence, KS (particularly in the mid-90's) when Shiner Bock made a big splash as folks would travel to Austin to play shows and come back lauding Shiner as some kind of undiscovered gem. Eventually, it made its way to Kansas--via some new distribution agreement, no doubt. It sold like wildfire for a while.....until people relaized that it's actually pretty awful: sweet and flat.

Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout ...  Sapporo Black

Very nice ..... another favorite of mine is Asahi Dry.

I never understood the Coors mystique

Me either (partly because it seems like the majority of folks in Indiana call it "Kerrs" and that just bugs me) or the whole "lite" phenomenon. It's beer... it's meant to fill you up and be fattening.

I can't really drink beer anymore. Mic Ultra or maybe some light, but I'll hit on shots of Svedka or Sky vodka.

My father is 87 years old and always drinks 2 beers a day. He thinks the best beer is the cheapest. So.......when back at the farm, I have to drink Old Milwaukee or some other stuff. I get shit if I bring my own stuff - this means I'm dangerously close to being an alcoholic to him.

I can't remember the $.99 per six stuff we bought in college, but it had the American flag on the label with the motto "It's Chemically Brewed"!

Once while driving across America with my boss, we went into the motel lounge to find about a dozen truckers sitting at the bar. They were all drinking Michelob. The barkeep said "Michelob?". My boss said "That's a women's beer - they add lots of sugar to attract the ladies". I almost ran for the door.

For cheap American beer I prefer Rolling Rock. Light, refreshing, not too sweet or filling.

I enjoy beer. I do agree, however, that in nearly any price range and/or beer type, much of the beer in that category tastes much the same.

Most all the American-made, mass-market domestics taste the same (although you can spend a little or a lot to get the same product). It depends on how cool you feel holding which bottle in your hand (I enjoy my beer from a glass, by the way).

There are various beers in the Pilsner Urquell category. Another major beer type is that of the Guinness-type stout. Then there are the Asian beers, the Mexican beers, and the German beers.

People have their favorites. I know I have mine. Some of the differences, between beers of the same type, are so subtle the difference can hardly be noticed.

Hah! You're wrong, oh misguided one! You see, Moosehead has a really cool label! So there!
