ghost of miles Posted September 28, 2019 Report Posted September 28, 2019 Anybody else here a fan of this pianist? I met him a few years ago when he came back to Bloomington with Dave Douglas' group. I'm most familiar with his playing on Douglas' records; any recommendations for dates under his own name or notable sideman recordings elsewhere? Quote
mjazzg Posted September 28, 2019 Report Posted September 28, 2019 I've seen him with Tim Berne and been impressed. There's a duet album with TB that I keep meaning to sample. The run of albums on Pi are worth your attention. I often find them a challenging listen but in a good way, knotty compositions always well played by well chosen musicians. I find it quite cerebral music but that's just me. Notvmusic to whistle along too perhaps but none the worse for that. Quote
Steve Reynolds Posted September 28, 2019 Report Posted September 28, 2019 Saw one of his new groups 2 weeks ago. Wonderful. Often these complex compositions interspersed with improv is not my thing but Mitchell is very talented. Bought his last two group recordings at the concert and they are in the Q. Quote
