ghost of miles Posted September 5, 2019 Report Posted September 5, 2019 (edited) Night Lights show on the topic, which also mentions a couple of books about jazz expatriates: Paris Noir: African-American Jazz Musicians In France The program also includes the Art Ensemble of Chicago, which I don't think has been mentioned yet in this thread. JSngry Posted September 5, 2019 Report Posted September 5, 2019 Would anybody care to look at "repatriate" as opposed to "expatriate"? Quote

You mean those who did emigrate ("go expat") and returned home later on? Red Mitchell (one who hasn't been named among the expats yet either, BTW). JSngry Posted September 5, 2019 Report Posted September 5, 2019 Guess I'm looking for the wrong word...whatever it is where a person doesn't just move to another country, but actually becomes a citizen of it. Quote

During the 60´s he was member of Dizzys Quintet and later settled in Europe, Germany, after that in Austria where he died. Yes, Leo Wright was definitely in these parts. Saw him playing with a local rhythm section at Club 43 in Manchester in about 1967. Quote
romualdo Posted September 6, 2019 Report Posted September 6, 2019 has anyone mentioned Nathan Davis? Quote
duaneiac Posted September 6, 2019 Report Posted September 6, 2019 Does Alan Broadbent still live in the US, or has he returned to New Zealand these days? And what did big name Canadians like Oscar Peterson and Maynard Ferguson (or Diana Krall nowadays) do? Did they hold joint Canadian & US citizenship? Quote
GA Russell Posted September 6, 2019 Report Posted September 6, 2019 I saw Donna Hightower in Madrid, though she may not rank with these others mentioned. Quote
Gheorghe Posted September 6, 2019 Report Posted September 6, 2019 Chet Baker has been mentioned ? He lived so much in Europe, though I doubt he ever had a Steady home…. he traveled, but his main activity in the late 70´s and 80´s had become Europe. Quote

Last I heard, Broadbent had moved from L.A. to NYC. That accounts for the title of this 2019 release: So I guess Broadbent is still an expat -- unless he's become a U.S. citizen. Quote
duaneiac Posted September 6, 2019 Report Posted September 6, 2019 Thanks for that info, HutchFan. I did not know Alan Broadbent had a new CD out. Geez, the last one I have from him is his 'Round Midnight release from 2004! Darius Brubeck lived in Durban, South Africa for many years and then moved to London. Not sure if that's where he resides today. Stephane Grappelli lived in England during the war and for several years post-war. Was his final home back in Paris, though? Jean-Luc Ponty, perhaps? He lived in the US for a while, but I think (not sure) he is living in France again now. Quote
