Gheorghe
Impulse made two Albums (later one Album on CD) of "Americans in Europe". Besides the mentioned Don Byas and Bud Powell, who are on that Album, let´s say Indrees Suleiman tp, Lou Bennett organ, Jimmy Gourley g, Bassist Jimmy Woode ! I heard him on several occasions with Johnny Griffin. How About Archie Shepp ? Doesn´t he live in Paris or at least lived a Long time in Paris ? Hank Mobley stayed in Europe in the late 60´s . From the older Generation: Benny Waters.

Big Beat Steve
Many have been named but are all these AMERICANS who decided to live in EUROPE (as asked in the opening thread)? Sir Charles Thompson?? ... Some more who who DID move to Europe: Bobby Burgess Rhoda Scott Nancy Holloway (OK, she's on the fringe of jazz, but still ...) And here's one who went BOTH ways: Rolf Ericson
Gheorghe
Besides the above mentioned I had forgotten to Mention Saxophonist Leo Wright. During the 60´s he was member of Dizzys Quintet and later settled in Europe, Germany, after that in Austria where he died.
jazzbo
Yes, Leo Wright, what a great musician. One of the very first LPs I ever owned was "Blues Shout" on Atlantic, where he played alto on one side with Richard Williams, and flute on the other with Harry Lookofsky--Junior Mance, Art Davis and Charles Persip were the support. Fantastic album! I love the arrangements and playing.
duaneiac
Helen Merrill lived in Japan for several years. Jimmy Hamilton moved to the Virgin Islands. Do they count? Not all expatriates head to Europe.
mikeweil
I think any musician who moved to another country for longer than a year qualifies - no matter what direction he or she took. Sir Charles Thompson permanently moved to Japan in 2002. Has anybody mentioned these other greats living in France and elsewhere? Johnny Griffin Sidney Bechet Nina Simone David Friedman Walter Norris (the latter two taught in Berlin for many years) Pianist Mickey Tucker and drummer Chad Wackerman moved to Australia. German born guitarist David Fiuczyinsky moved to the US. Rolf Kühn lived in the US for some time. And what about the many Cubans, Carrbeans, and South Americans moving to th USA? Some more Europeans moving to the US: Miroslav Vitous Jan Hammer Vera Auer Tommy Vig Milcho Leviev Michal Urbaniak Urszula Dudziak Avishai Cohen Edited September 5, 2019 by mikeweil
