JSngry Posted August 23, 2019 Report Posted August 23, 2019 The program seems just a wee bit spotty, but it's always a pleasure to hear that band from that time...CHARACTER! Quote

Ken Dryden Posted August 25, 2019 Report Posted August 25, 2019 One More Time For The People is easily Duke’s worst song. No wonder Cootie Williams stormed off when it was called. Quote
Ken Dryden Posted August 27, 2019 Report Posted August 27, 2019 They make it appear that Johnny Mercer was co-writer of "Things Ain't What They Used To Be," the song that Mercer Ellington supposedly won from Johnny Hodges in a card game. Quote
medjuck Posted August 28, 2019 Report Posted August 28, 2019 It's a mistake I once heard a CBC announcer make when he saw the song credited to Mercer Ellington (not Mercer-Ellington). A little knowledge is a dangerous thing. Quote
Ken Dryden Posted August 28, 2019 Report Posted August 28, 2019 I will have to check to see if the Ellingtonia Discography lists this concert. I hope they didn't leave out any tracks when they could have easily deleted "One More Time For The People" and the usual medley of hits (often called the "Dread Medley" by critics). Quote
Ken Dryden Posted August 29, 2019 Report Posted August 29, 2019 There were two concerts on November 9, 1971 with slightly different set lists. This CD evidently comes from the second show, though the final number, Black Swan, was omitted. Quote

king ubu Posted October 23, 2019 Report Posted October 23, 2019 Storyville seems to have failed to provide a line-up ... they list one on the website, and I guess there's no question marks generally: Cootie Williams, Harold “Money” Johnson, Eddie Preston, Mercer Ellington, John Coles (tp), Chuck Connors, Malcolm Taylor, Booty Wood (tb), Russell Procope (as, cl), Harold “Geezil” Minerve (as, f, pi), Norris Turney (as, ts, cl, f), Harold Ashby (ts, cl), Paul Gonsalves (ts), Harry Carney (bars, cl, bcl), Duke Ellington (p), Joe Benjamin (b), Rufus Jones (dr), Lena Junoff, Nell Brookshire, Tony Watkins (vcl) https://www.storyvillerecords.com/products/uppsala-1971 That is, generally ... but regarding the singers, there is. Reviews mention Nell Brookshire and Tony Watkins doing a rollicking or embarassing (depending on point of view) version of "One More Time (for the People)" a.k.a. "One More Once", but one of the Swedish reviews published via ellington.se fails to list both Lena Junoff and Nell Brookshire, instead providing Bobbi Gordon, while the other again mentions Brookshire/Watkins: review and links found here: https://ellington.se/2019/08/11/duke-ellington-in-uppsala-1971/ Not that it matters all that much, but why can't Storyville list the personnel in their booklet?
