undergroundagent Posted March 12, 2004 Report Posted March 12, 2004 I was just sitting here listening to some Miles for the first time in a few months, and his music never ceases to amaze me. I was curious about some of your favorites. My personal faves are: "In a Silent Way" & "Jack Johnson", though I can't knock the big three of the 50s either (KOB, Milestones & Round About Midnight). Genius!!! Quote
king ubu Posted March 12, 2004 Report Posted March 12, 2004 I'd agree with all those you listed! A few more to add to the list: Sketches of Spain, Miles Smiles. ubu Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted March 12, 2004 Report Posted March 12, 2004 My faves are always gonna be Nefertiti and Sorcerer. Then again, I'm lovin' the new Jack Johnson box a TON, and I've always loved Jack Johnson. Quote
ralphie_boy Posted March 12, 2004 Report Posted March 12, 2004 My favorite is Blue Moods. I'm not sure if it's the great rendition of Nature Boy, or the presence of Mingus and Elvin Jones (Teddy Charles too), but I just love this session. Quote
sal Posted March 12, 2004 Report Posted March 12, 2004 Kind of Blue and Miles Smiles are my all time favs. Of course, you can't exclude Relaxin', Filles De Kilimanjaro, In A Silent Way, Milestones, ESP, etc........... That question is too difficult! Quote

undergroundagent Posted March 12, 2004 Author Report Posted March 12, 2004 You know I never really got into that record...sometimes there can be just too much Miles. I use to have over 50 discs by him, but I've cut it down to the six that I think are essential (those listed in my first post + "Bitches Brew"). All Miles is great though...one day I'll get back into the second Quintet. Quote
PHILLYQ Posted March 12, 2004 Report Posted March 12, 2004 I always had a major soft spot for 'Agharta'- to me, it seems like the music hits you like a runaway freight train at times, at others it glides softly. The way the band shifts on a dime between the two extremes always knocked me out. But I do love 'In A Silent Way' 'KOB', etc. It's soooo hard to pick one... Quote
Clunky Posted March 12, 2004 Report Posted March 12, 2004 '58 sessions "Stella by Starlight"- especially the four studio tracks Quote
BruceH Posted March 12, 2004 Report Posted March 12, 2004 I hate to say this, but for me it's still Kind of Blue. Go figure, huh? Quote
brownie Posted March 12, 2004 Report Posted March 12, 2004 Didn't we go through this a few months ago? Think I put in 'Cookin' with the Miles Davis Quintet' as my favorite. Then, it's the second time around for my favorite Miles... Quote
jazzypaul Posted March 12, 2004 Report Posted March 12, 2004 In no particular order... Miles Smiles Seven Steps '64 Concert Round About Midnight Bitches Brew Sorcerer Nefertiti Tutu Miles In The Sky Quote
ghost of miles Posted March 12, 2004 Report Posted March 12, 2004 Right now it's LIFT TO THE SCAFFOLD. Quote
couw Posted March 12, 2004 Report Posted March 12, 2004 some dubious character on this board pointed me towards this thread. I might as well reply then, eh? My favourite Miles is early Miles. The Birth of the Cool and the 2 BN volumes are actually rather high up my list. Is that okay? Quote
catesta Posted March 12, 2004 Report Posted March 12, 2004 Since it the all clear sign has been given, I will say this is my favorite. pssssst....., it's mainly because of JC. Quote
tonym Posted March 12, 2004 Report Posted March 12, 2004 This is hard and I read the post a few hours ago. I have always said Miles Smiles in the past, but it is very intense. In A Silent Way could be a Desert Island disc. Quote
Shrdlu Posted March 12, 2004 Report Posted March 12, 2004 This is hard, as there are so many excellent ones. I think I'll go for "In A Silent Way" (not because Tony M has just said so, though no disrespect intended, Tony). It just happens to be one that I've played more than any other, and it still sounds fresh, after over 30 years - I had the LP when it first came out. What a shock it was to hear the "original" version of "Shhh, Peaceful" in the box set! Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted March 12, 2004 Report Posted March 12, 2004 Kind of Blue still sounds perfect to me. Silent Way and My Funny Valentine are my runners up. Quote
GA Russell Posted March 13, 2004 Report Posted March 13, 2004 My favorite is Birth of the Cool. Some of the melodies run through my head from time to time. Quote

Larry Kart Posted March 13, 2004 Report Posted March 13, 2004 In terms of its imprinting impact at that time, Milestones. It was like the voice of God -- or several Gods (Philly Joe certainly among them) -- had spoken. Quote
Aggie87 Posted March 13, 2004 Report Posted March 13, 2004 Various bootlegs. Just curious, Jim, but are you saying that there is not a single "legit" Miles album that you like better than these bootlegs? Wow! Columbia (or someone) needs to get their hands on these! Quote
Jazzmoose Posted March 13, 2004 Report Posted March 13, 2004 Miles Smiles, with Nefertiti, ESP and Sorcerer in hot pursuit... Quote

I think it could also be construed as "the favorite mountain is the one that hasn't been climbed yet". Quote
