ctuck1 Posted June 7, 2019 Report Posted June 7, 2019 Recorded in 1975 for ESP Disk, but not released until 1991 and then only in Japan. https://blankformseditions.bandcamp.com/album/april-is-the-cruellest-month This Japanese guitarist is new to me; a fascinating listen for $7 via Bandcamp. Three tracks that build nicely; the 3rd track ("My Friend, Blood Shaking My Heart") is a 20-minute squall. If your sinuses need clearing, you may want to check this out. Quote

And it was reissued in 2007 on CD - again in Japan only. Some copies came with a CDr containing a later solo track from 1985. However - it gets my highest recommendation. Д.Д. Posted June 7, 2019 Report Posted June 7, 2019 Thanks for bringing this up. Available on Spotify too. His work with Kaoru Abe is worth checking out (not for the faint of heart!). Quote

But if one is able to withstand and enjoy Abe's playing (or Takayanagi's for that matter) one is on the safe side regarding mental health - IMHO. Quote
jlhoots Posted June 9, 2019 Report Posted June 9, 2019 "Squall" is not one of my favorite sounds. Quote
Late Posted May 6, 2022 Report Posted May 6, 2022 I didn't know this was being reissued. Too bad I don't really buy vinyl anymore. Might (?) have to make an exception in this case. This too. Quote
mhatta Posted June 9, 2022 Report Posted June 9, 2022 (edited) A Japanese TV documentary from 1981 (no English subtitles, but you can guess). Takayanagi plays "All The Things You Are" duo with Sadao Watanabe. It is quite rare. Edited June 9, 2022 by mhatta Quote
Late Posted June 9, 2022 Report Posted June 9, 2022 Thanks for sharing that. The end of the video cuts to Takayanagi in the hospital? Quote
clifford_thornton Posted June 10, 2022 Report Posted June 10, 2022 This is really interesting footage and it's new to me. I assume that is Kohsuke Mine on tenor? Big fan of Takayanagi and I'm glad some of this material is being rediscovered, remastered, and reissued. The Station '70 box sounds great. I was just listening to the Moers '80 LP the other day and was reminded of how each album was an innovation in some way over what came before. Quote
Rabshakeh Posted June 10, 2022 Report Posted June 10, 2022 I didn’t know that they played together. Are there any records? Quote
clifford_thornton Posted June 11, 2022 Report Posted June 11, 2022 Takayanagi is on Sadao Watanabe's self titled 1972 LP for CBS. It's a ripper. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted July 6, 2022 Report Posted July 6, 2022 Yes, I have an older reissue of Eclipse and did buy this box set as well. Can't comment on the Black Editions pressing of Eclipse but they did a great job on Station '70/Live Independence. The music is fantastic, of course, detailed and often quite dense. Quote
