Idris Muhammad is on record saying he didn't like playing with any percussionists other than Ralph MacDonald because they interfered with what he was trying to do; where Ralph was sensitive to the kit and complimented it. Maybe Blakey was the same way for the most part...and it depended on which percussionist was playing as to whether he could groove with them? Quote
Dub Modal Posted May 22, 2020 Report Posted May 22, 2020 As I mentioned Ralph MacDonald, here's a drum/percussion track with a little bit of flute thrown in. Steve Gadd on drums: Quote

I learned over the years that lot of kit drummers do not know how to modify their style to accommodate a conga or bongo player. They just do their thing, and expect the hand percussionist to follow along. And a lot of sound men in live settings do not understand the concept of placing the conga more predominantly in the mix than the kits. They too assume that the kit is the main thing and that the conga player is there as a stage prop. Quote
JSngry Posted May 23, 2020 Report Posted May 23, 2020 I don't trust people who don't understand drums/percussion. I mean I know buttloads of them, and even like quite many of them. But I don't trust any of them. Quote
